As someone who takes audio/home theater pretty seriously and calibrates my own setups..

I can tell you that this won't be accurate in regards to actual DB's and that it will vary WILDLY depending on the device used to do so as microphones in small devices tend not to be able to pick upp all of the frequency ranges and it will vary from device to device. I've personally tested these apps between devices.

IE: An Invidia N1 may show 70DB on one persons phone and 82DB on another persons phone.. The difference between those numbers is quite substantial, thats not including what the difference in the APP may cause.

If you are going to do this, you're better off finding people willing to go buy a cheap RadioShack DB meter. While not super accurate as a calibrated professional microphone, it will give everyone accurate readings regardless of the exhaust, i belive they are ~40 bucks.

I wish I had the time and money to buy all these exhausts/resell them. I have a calibrated Mic that I use for calibrating home theater setups that would work for this quite well.

Also, many phones feature automatic gain control so they can record both quiet and loud things at a usable level. Phones are just a bad idea when it comes to comparing volume. Exhaust note... maybe. Volume, definitely not.

I'm don't think the Legsport value is correct, the website doesn't report it. The only value reported is for the single silencer version, it's 92 dB, and it's not the maximum, but the proximity level, so at 5250 rpm.
Same for MXP, the sound level is at 5000 rpm, and for stock, 5250.
The list could go on with HKS...
You're confusing proximity level (that's the one for japanese homologation, 5250 rpm) with maximum value.

Unless they were all tested under a set and identical standard the whole project is nothing but a bunch of random numbers anyway.

Well, the values declared for Japanese homologation are tested from the Japanese Transportation Bureau, so I think they are correct and made with a certified instrument.

That is fine if all use the exact same set up. There is an actual ISO standard for measuring exhaust noise levels.
