what is the difference between 0w-20 and 5w-30

pros and cons please

which one are you guys using it?

0W 20 is specified by Subaru for your engine and 5W 30 isn't.

The 0W refers to effective viscosity at freezing temperatures. The lower the better. 0 means they have no actual specification for this as it flows so easily.

5W means that at freezing temperatures the oil flows like a 5 weight straight grade oil would at the same temperature. This is good but not as good as a 0W.

The 20 is the effective viscosity when the oil is hot. It means the oil flows as easily as a straight grade 20 weight oil would when hot. Lower is better PROVIDED the engine is designed for it. Subaru designed this engine to use 0W 20 so that's what you should use.

Having said that using 5W 30 will not harm your engine but you will lose a bit of power and your fuel consumption would go up so why do it?

Some will suggest you use 5W 30 if you track the car but unless you have upgraded the brake pads and the tires those will get too hot long before your engine oil does.

Anyway, 0W 30 would be a better choice for heavy track work. That way you could drive it in winter.

There's lots of BS exchanged on the Internet (and in track cafés) about oil. Bottom line is your engine manufacturer has tested his engines on the specified oil under all imaginable conditions for huge mileages. So, just use that oil.

Full synthetic is the oil to use.

Owner manual suggest using 0w30 under "extreme" condition (track, extreme temps, etc.). 5w30 (unless used at very cold temps) will not harm your engine in any way.

I use redline 5w30 since the beginning (because 5w is all I can find close) and beat the crap out of it, still running strong.

Please stop creating threads and do some searching. There are countless threads along with used oil analysis that answer your questions.

We understand you're new, welcome to the forum but get aquatinted with the existing threads that answer your question before creating new ones.

The difference between oil weights can be found anywhere online.

You may wish to do some more research on the SAE J300 viscosity grading system, it's meaning, specifications and testing procedures.

SAE J300 has very well defined specifications for 0W-?? Engine oils. By definition oil cranking viscosities at -35C and pumping viscosities at -40C are provided to ensure that properly formulated and blended engine oils will have oil viscosity properties that will allow engine starting and oil pumping down to those temperatures.
