Brake Fluid Swap (How Many Quarts)
Swapping to a more race oriented brake fluid to get ready for the track in a few weeks. Did a couple quick searches but didn't come up with anything in my hurry.
How many quarts of brake fluid is needed to properly flush the system and replace? Thanks! |

Interesting question. When I replaced the stock fluid last summer, I first changed to ATE Super Blue fluid. After driving for a few days (perhaps a week or so), I switched the fluid again to Motul RBF 600. Each time I used a bit more than a quart. Why? Well, the fluid reservoir is difficult to empty due to internal parts. Perhaps because of this, the fluid that is put in mixes with the fluid that is being replaced. It took a long time to get a uniform blue color with the ATE Super Blue, and then a long time again for it to clear up on the second fluid change. Perhaps there is a better technique for this, but this is how I did it.

Used 1 liter of ATE Super Blue to change the fluid this weekend. Worked out great, as that's all I had left.
Thanks guys! |

1L the first flush, and then 500mL for subsequent bleeds (but you can use 1L if you want to be REALLY sure; a lot of fluids come in 1L bottles)

Epic info, thanks Mike.
What's the best bleeder bottle/hose setup you guys like? I also need to throw some RBF600 in there for track days, haven't done bleeds in the last 4 years or so, so I don't have any of the gear. I'd rather not go through two or three junky bleed kits, or live with a sucky one that I paid too much for. Also I've got a half liter bottle of RBF600 that is 4 years old. Still good? Should I be worried about it?

http://www.turnermotorsport.com/show...bleeder-bottle They have actually improved it now though, so I need to buy the new one: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/show...e-simple-bleed I would think a 4 year old bottle of brake fluid would have absorbed quite a bit of moisture. I probably wouldn't use it.

Still sealed. I'll take a look and see if it's got a silver seal under the sealed cap.
I love Turner, what they do for BMW racing, clubsport racing, and the BMW community, and have many of their parts on my 330i. Brake bleeder ordered. Love the one way valve on it... looks good.

You are good then. I figured a 4 year old bottle would have been opened, haha.

Thanks for the help- hoping this thread can answer the bleeder question and fluid amount question as more people get into track days with their BRZs. Note for newbies- Throwing high quality brake fluid in the car is a must for track days!

I used just about 2 bottles of Motul RBF660. I first flushed it with the ATE super blue. I also had dry calipers as i rebuilt mine.

One and a half liters got my system flushed after installing cross drilled and slotted rotors, pads, and Stainless braided lines all around. When you uninstall the factory lines pretty much everything drains out anyway .I even used a turkey baster to suck out the master cylinder before hand and drained the calipers.Bleeding with the one man system took me to 1 liter.Doing a subsequent old fashioned bleed took another 1/2 liter plus add the 1/2 liter I put in the bleed bottle equals 2 liters.Like a dumbass I bought 4 liters because somebody on here said that's what it takes.Nope.2 liters is plenty. And if you don't use a bleeder bottle then 1 1/2 is fine
