I understand you can order the parts.

Ordering the parts does not mean it is officially supported nor does it mean TRD Japan and US are the same.

Oh... well I usually don't expect any warranty with stick on parts anyway lol. Not sure what you mean by TRD and US not being the same. Are you saying that if I order this GR part from Japan, it's not the same as the one sold in Japan or are you saying it's not officially available for the US market? Cause either way it doesn't really matter.

I'm saying it's not officially available from a US dealership via their official channels, so if you are buying it in the US it's sold via a gray market importer.

Just to be clear:

TRD Japan = Toyota Technocraft Co. Ltd (http://www.toyota-ttc.co.jp/english/)

TRD US = TRD USA (http://www.trdusa.com)

The two basically do not collaborate on parts development.

To make matters worse, Gazoo Racing is basically Toyota Japan developing their own performance parts.

Toyota went racing at Le Mans the last few years, initially under Toyota Racing, then under Toyota Gazoo Racing. The entire development was done by Toyota Motorsport GmbH, aka TMG in Cologne Germany. TMG basically has been the primary force behind all of Toyota's efforts in WRC, Formula 1, and other major sanctioned races outside of Japan and US. Toyota Gazoo Racing is a name slapped on a team that is under the control of Toyota Japan. TRD Japan basically works independently of everyone else.

Confused yet?

Have you tried ordering TRD parts before? Which parts? From what dealer?

Most of the orderable parts stateside (that you can get from a Toyota dealer) are not parts you can buy in Japan, most of them are sourced from a vendor or OE supplier on the US side.

Most of the Japan parts, you can inquire but you will get one of two replies:

"Yes we can get it but it's special order, blah blah. Oh and no warranty."
"No we can't get it."
idk if I'm misunderstanding your replies, but when I called carson toyota for technocraft parts their only questions were which ones and what's your credit card number

For Japan only TRD parts? They would be a pretty rare dealer if they could/would order them.

Some dealers (like Carson Toyota, Cabe, etc) will give you the correct answer about TRD Japan parts.

Some will not.

Carson Toyota isn't ordering it from Toyota USA or any normal source for OE/TRD US parts, so they are sourcing it from an importer in the US, or on their own from Japan. The above about warranty, etc still applies.

yeah. for example I got the technocraft front lip, sideskirts, roof spoiler and areo fins from them and picked it up at the dealer. More exclusive parts like 14r I don't think they can get.

I think they get them from their own because they pulled up parts numbers when I ordered from them.
But yes the whole situation regarding TRD USA is highly unfortunate given what they are in japan.

I also should mention that Toyota Japan / TRD Japan operate in a similar fashion to Nissan Japan / Nismo Japan.

OEM genuine parts, only available from dealers. They usually do not sell wholesale so large qty requires some special negotiation to buy.

TRD parts, available via aftermarket distributors. Anyone with access to aftermarket distributors can get it. Pricing usually determined by Toyota Technocraft, so if it is for a known exporter they jack up the pricing. So, "good priced" items are always sourced from Japan via a seemingly domestic retailer who is operating an export business.

It's not unfortunate, it's a fact of life in this aftermarket. Industry politics + history + personal connections over many years. I write this so people can understand the market more, some things can be had and be thankful they can be bought.

Fun facts for this Friday.
