Actually, I don't think they do. What the designers need to do is design it so it doesn't look like there used to be one, but they just put a piece of plastic over it when they realized they didn't need it.

It needs to have a personality but it doesn't have to be a grill.

I agree that a cars design does not need a grill. Like an old 911. But, on the 911, there isn't a glaring spot that is left blank where one should go. Like a Telsa model 3 or the new ford Must-UV-thang. So, I think we are saying the same thing.

What's funny is the new electric cars BMW has coming out. They're still trying to shove their grills into the front bumpers like in the i4 concept. I know it's just a concept, but jeez lol It's fine on the i3 and i4, but the i4 has that X7 grill. Sad thing is that it would actually look okay without it

See, now they could have used the Probe front end as a style guide. It had much more minimal "grill" area. Could have called it the "Electric Probe"....OK maybe not.

A number of good looking front and rear engine cars have had little or no front grill. How hard can it be?

Totally doable. Like Hawk said the problem I see with the Ford is it looks like there was supposed to a grill and they just shoved a panel in the space. Just design it without any pretense of a grill (like your samples) and all is good.

Funny I owned two of your four examples.

A good director would build something out of nothing. Watch Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction and My Super Ex Girlfriend. Using or not using a grill is not an issue for a good designer.
