New Car Smell

Isn't it great? But why? The smell source is toxic, can't be good for you. I think the main reason we love the smell is that it reminds us that we have a new car.

My wife is one of these (rare?) people who don't like the new car smell. Gives her a headache, she says. So I've been driving around with the windows down to try to get rid of it.

How long did it take for the new car smell to dissipate on your car?

Don't remember. The last new car I bought was back in the 80s.

Lol. I actually have an air freshener that keeps it smelling like a new car. It is the scent of leather.

My new 2017 BRZ gave off a particularly unusual smell, nothing like any other new car I've ever owned before, almost a "burning" odor emanating from the engine bay. That smell (fortunately) dissipated rather quickly, after <100 miles driving.
Other BRZ new car smells e.g. the interior weren't as unusual (as that engine bay burning smell), just fairly typical new car chemical odors; the interior still smells (new, the same, etc.) after several weeks and several hundred miles.

Ever time I think it gone away and leave the car closed for a few days it is back. Not sure it goes away so much as I get used to it.

Probably about a month till I stopped smelling it, though I'm sure it was still there at least a bit and I'd just gotten used to it.

Probably give it 2-3 months to completely dissipate.

I tried to leave it in the sun with windows open a crack if I trusted the area I parked in.

Heh, yeah.

Prior to the 2017 BRZ I had a (much loved) 1991 MX-5 which I kept for over 22 years, and even in the 2nd decade of ownership I was still periodically wiping that leaching "vinyl fog" off the interior side of the windshield glass every few months (or less).

Toxic interior materials/fumes BTW begs for a whole other thread-- windows up or down, air conditioning on or off? (no small feat in South Florida, daytime highs already in the upper 80s here, however I personally HATE running air conditioning).
