Hi Sho, any update on this one. My 86 is also making a rattling noise similar to what has been discussed on this thread.

i got told subby and toyota are working on the issue but thats about it so far

you should take yours to the dealer/service centre to report and log the issue

Thanks Sho. Took it in for the 1000Ks and they compared the noise to another 86 they had. They said it was a characteristic of the engine. Reading this thread and others, it seems like a common issue that is also happening on the dealer's 86.

Ive listed to videos of other 86s accelerating on youtube and I don't hear it. Not sure what to make of it.

did they say anything like they will get a solution for it?

Im getting a bit of pinging in mine, but only on harder upshifts.

I have heard rattling which someone could mistake for pinging coming from my engine bay. After 5 seconds with the bonnet open I knew what I was hearing.

If the car is actually pinging, haven't heard it so far, and I always drive without the radio, even giving it more gas in a high gear to load the engine does not seem to produce pinging.

Open your bonnet
Look at the red plastic cover on the positive terminal of the battery
Tape that down so it can't move or take it off

Does the pinging go away?

No mine was definately pinging, I know the sound well!
But it hasn't been doing it in the last few weeks, so I'm guessing the computer has made the appropriate adjustments

I have the same pinging as the OP. It was confirmed by my dealer. Bringing it in for this plus many other issues on Thursday.

Hello.. too bad this thread was stopped for 3 months.. i have a friend that have this kind of problem too.. manual tranny.. maybe someone care to continue this ?? Luckily if someone has had it done on what to do/happened..

Took the BRZ to the Subaru dealer today and they are looking to see if there is a service patch to correct the issue for my car. I will let everyone know how I get on.

In the meantime I would recommend that eveyone do a simple test of their cars to see if they ping or not. Like the OP says it is most apparent when off the throttle in 5th at around 60-70 Km/h then when getting back on it (fairly quickly) there may be a rattle noise (which is the ping). Give it a few tries to be sure as it can be somewhat random.
