Those are much more effective then you would think. In fact, a commercial version is available for about $600. I've seen it used in small aircraft. Works for about 3 hours and can knock the temperature down by up to 30 degrees.

The only drawback is that while they do cool the air they also add a shitload of humidity as the ice melts. Work great while they work but when they stop it can be far worse than when you started. We tried them in a small area at a heat treat plant I worked in and the guys loved and then very quickly hated the effect.

There is a fan that blows the air across the ice and out the tube.

This unit uses a heat exchanger rather than blowing directly over the ice, so it doesn't add humidity. Adding humidity would be really bad in an aircraft (particularly a new one with all that electronic equipment). That also explains the $600 price. Of course, even in a small plane a certified AC unit can cost $25,000 so that price isn't as high as it sounds!

Ahhhh that makes more sense. We tried a heat exchanger one as well and burnt it out in about 2 hours. I have one of the heat exchanger type coolers that you plug into your car and it actually works pretty well as long as the car is running. Will suck a battery dry in about and hour if it isn't though.

Seems legit. I would rather make it but with dry ice, less mess
