I remember the PSN hacking. I'm not exactly enthusiastic about Sony either. But I'm more optimistic about their next generation. |

Not quite as much as you'd probably expect. At least if you don't include all the electronics -- the vast majority of which I already had.
Lumber was about $250. This could be done for a lot less. Previous versions (this is my 3rd over 8 years) were all MDF. It's cheap, but weighs an unholy amount with the quantity and thicknesses used; and I move frequently. Construction using that was never as clean either. So this time most of the structure was dimensional lightweight cabinet-grade pine 1x12s. The left console and the monitor-surround remain MDF, but are only 1/4". I moved the entire thing myself up to the 2nd floor, whereas my last previous version I could literally barely even move myself and took 3 professional movers to get it out of my basement. The laminate was about $200. Could be done for less, but I went with some custom colors. I was looking for something sort of Mass Effect inspired, so there's a small bit of N7 armor influence in there. Previous versions were White/Black (hence the seat used) which clashed and showed dirt too much. Miscellaneous bits, about $250. That includes paint, contact cement (of which I used at least a full gallon), cooling fans (2 x 80mm in the console shelves and 2 x 240mm in the monitor area), the temperature controlled fan activation unit, the CF vinyl wrap, and the diamond plate. Most of this stuff is optional. But I can tell you that, without exhaust of some sort, it gets quite hot sitting that close to a monitor with a console next to your knee. You probably could something that looked identical for as little as $300 for all 1/4" MDF and the laminate with no options -- and I can't stress how much better the thing looks with laminate versus painted surfaces so I wouldn't consider just painting an option. Now all my pre-existing bits... Onkyo Receiver: $300. You can get a refurb or some other less-featured unit for about $100. Speakers: ~$200. You could pick up something on eBay for probably $50. Seat: $200. Any number of options on eBay or a junkyard. Mine's an old Playseat model, but one day soon I'd like to put in something OEM from a junkyard or eBay. But I'm somewhat limited in dimensions on width with my design. Done again, I'd widen the thing by probably 3". Actually, maybe more since with the behemoth that is the XBone, the console shelves need to gain about 3" in width too. So maybe a total of 6" wider. 42" TV: Can be had for $200 all day long thesedays. Tools: This doesn't really require anything all that special. One of the reasons I stayed away from so much MDF was that, without a proper table saw, I can't perfectly cut sheets into smaller dimensional strips. So the only tools used were an electric drill, a circular saw, a jigsaw, and a router. And you could do without the jigsaw, it just made a couple things (like cutting the diamond plate and the fan holes) easier. The circular saw was used with a clamp-on guide, so the cuts were dead straight. The router was used for cleaning up the edges of the laminate and for mirroring pieces for perfect symmetry. And all pieces were put together with pocket screws, so I bought a couple Kreg jigs to make that easy. Last edited by SigmaHyperion; 10-31-2013 at 09:26 AM. |

I have another 12-16 months before I finish my degree so I promised myself I wouldn't do any gaming at all until it's complete.

I love FM4 and FM5 sounds like it's gonna be a good improvement, but FUUUUUUU it's too much money for that damn game console. I got rid of all of my gaming stuff.
I'll spend the money on driving at actual track events.
