Back a few years ago when gas was still expensive we could easily pay $6 to $6.50 a gallon (price converted from our liters) but the Canadian dollar was at par or even a few cents stronger than the US one. Then the bottom dropped out of the oil prices and the price of gas plunged. When the price of oil did it's nose dive the Canadian dollar went with it since much of our economy is based on oil. So now we pay $4.70 for gas but every single thing we import from the US (which is a shitload) now costs us 30% more. Personally I would much rather be paying that $6 again and not have things such as an $80 diffuser bought on Ebay end up costing me $220 by the time everything is tacked on. The cheap gas is kicking the crap out of Canada.

Regular (87) around Raleigh is $2.09 - 2.25 USD.

Premium (93) is $2.75 - 2.99 USD.

Though that's just for top tier station prices, I don't put bargain basement swill into any of my cars.

$.40, typically. So like $4 more a fill up, and $16 more a month. I could bring my own lunch twice a month and cover the extra cost without any other change to my lifestyle.

But I budget for gas with all of my other expensive. When gas was around $5, I was more careful about my driving habits and thought about the cost more, also I was earning a lot less. Now $3/gal doesn't phase me too much. I know we are fortunate that it is so cheap, especially when compared to California, Europe, or Canada - apparently.

imo, not much you can do about it, nobody should have pretended that even a cheap sports car is terribly economical to drive, especially if you measure your economy in smiles/mile.

I'm not so much complaining about the price of fuel, it is what it is, and the bulk of my driving every year is in a company truck that I don't pay gas for. I've averaging like 11,500km (7145 miles) per year, so my fuel costs aren't even an issue.

I'm just blown away that some 'Muricans complain about the price of fuel, without knowing how good they have it compared to the rest of the world. You fools ever look up what fuel costs in the UK? 5.53 USD per gallon for regular. That is ridiculous

Yeah, Canadians and Europeans have it pretty bad, but then again, regular gas is also expensive, so it comes back to the actual difference between regular and premium.

To me, the twins can be pretty fuel efficient. I drive mine with fuel efficiency in mind up until I get to a corner.

California is actually the most modest location in this thread with respect to the price differential between regular in premium, almost always guaranteed to be <$0.40 difference between 87 and 91 (typically it's right at $0.20-$0.30), vs. your reported numbers where you are paying ~$7 more to buy 10 gallons of premium vs. regular.

Literally nobody in this thread with a California location is complaining.

My wife complained all the freakin' time about how much "more" gas cost in my car. The fact that she got 22mpg and I got 34mpg was totally beyond her comprehension. She just looked at the price at the pump. Sure I could save a few bucks but damn it then I would not like driving as much and enjoying even my long straight commute is worth the extra to me.

Ya the high price of gas here is mostly taxes. It pays for our "free" healthcare that everybody is always so envious of.

What actually happens is we have a proposition on the ballot to raise income tax, raise sales tax, and...it always goes through. Kind of strange, because sales tax is regressive, which goes against the liberal goal of attacking wealth inequality.

I would love to see an economist/sociologist explain why people here seem to love more taxes lol. Certainly goes against all the textbooks I have read.

Either way, the gasoline tax is really not that bad here. It's only $1/gallon more than the cheapest parts of the country. Part of that is higher costs like real estate. The taxes add up to, I dunno, 20%? of the cost? That's not that bad. In Europe, the tax on fuel is like 200%, which actually hurts the wallet pretty bad.

In Baltimore I always buy 93 octane at Costco. Today it's$2.42/gal. and $2.12/gal. for regular. 30 cents per gallon more,not bad. Plus it's a top tier gas

That's one way of stating it. Another way would be to say it's 50% more expensive than other parts of the country, like NC for instance. $3.00/gal is a big difference than $2.00/gal

And yes it's way worse in Europe. But they made their bed to sleep in as well. Plus everything over there is generally more dense, as (what would we consider modern) civilization and development over there mostly took place during the age of the horse, not the automobile. (Hence a car is not as much of a necessity)

20-30 cents more per gallon for 91 over 87 around here. The stations that are really cheap or really expensive generally have the 30-40 cent difference. Most are just 20 cents more.
