You guys realize it doesn't take 1000 miles for the rings to seat? Do you remember the test drive when the sales guy told you to nail it?


The engines are run before they leave the factory, they are broken-in by the time they hit the dealer lots.

that is true. when i was deciding on the FRS to choose from the 4 they had on the lot we test drove one and when the sales rep took the wheel first he red lined the car all the way through 4 gears to show me how quick the car was. that one we test drove only have 40 miles on it. so yeah i do believe that a lot of us are driving off the lots with cars that we can assume were driven hard during test drives. when i received my FRS it already had 200 miles on it because it had to be delivered from a different dealer. since i owned it i haven't revd past 4k rpms. im at 930 miles now and almost at the 1000mile mark.

Yes, but what I'm saying is ALL modern cars are broken-in by the time they leave the test dyno at the factory.

I tracked my car right after 1000 miles with break in oil, then changed all fluids after track day.

Not sure if I did any harm to the engine

BTW I'm no expert, that is why I'm asking.

If you're changing your oil every 3K miles, you're throwing money away. Even the cheapest SAE certified oil will go 5K. The only reason the change interval is so low on this car is because it's expected to be driven hard.

Yes, but it takes time and heat cycles for the entire drivetrain to properly break in. Yes, most of this is already done for you. There's also a far lesser need to do a real "break in" these days as the tolerances and finishes on mating parts are so much better than decades ago. Finish still doesn't account for heat cycles though.

so i finally broke the 1000mile mark, i took the car for a spirited drive around town and opened her up a bit. looking to get a complete fluid change soon oil/diff/trans. going to probably wait till 2000miles for that. again i wanna thank everyone for their inputs and comments

now for some upgrades

Too lazy to read the entire thread, but the way I saw it (in terms of break in and oil changes) I'm going with what the manufacturer has with their schedule. I asked my dealer about doing early fluid changes (engine, tranny and LSD) and he said just follow the schedule. I don't know whether it's because he didn't care, or he was busy at the time. (Although I believe it was just good advice, he's been very helpful every time I've asked about or for something). But in the end, if one of those parts fail, that's what warranty is for. And I sure as hell cant be put at fault for following the manufacturer's service schedule.

i actually just called the scion dealer and asked the mechanic the same thing. he responded with the same reply. i was told to just stick with the required maintenance schedule. i am going to assume the same thing and that its for warranty reasons. so far they have been very helpful so ima drive my FRS conservatively and limit my spirited runs till after my first tune up. on another note i did ask about adding mod parts that wouldn't void the warranty and he said as long as they are TRD parts and dealer installed it would not void the warranty. i have read previous post that have confirmed that but its just nice to know and reiterate the fact lol. it just hurts to see that they charge up the butt for installs

Definitely! I had the oil changed at 900 miles and I HIGHLY recommend it. The engine runs beautifully...I have no torque like the rest of us Lol.

The Dyno at the factory seems to break in the bearings and cams like any new engine needs. Sounds like this is going over 4000k RPM
