If that were the case the water velocity wouldn't increase. Some hoses may behave this way, but for the purpose of my thought experiment the area reduced.

The reason this actually happens is that when doing this you're increasing the pressure behind the nozzle and as the water passes through the nozzle this pressure potential energy is being converted to kinetic energy.

If I had to field a guess I would say the materials have better flow characteristics than stock while still keeping the airflow uniform across the MAF sensor.

Who knows what the airflow looks like without a filter at all right?

Also, i would be willing to bet that all these filters lean out the AFR(by a small amount) and that is where their gains would mostly come from.

That makes good sense.

Sorry but you can't expect to do ONE baseline run and then TWO post runs and give results. If you did 3-5 baseline runs that dyno could've easily read 168whp.

Using that same logic, one could just as easily argue if he did 3-5 runs with the filter, he could've easily read 173whp.

If we're going to continue using LOGIC here, no FILTER is going to make 5whp on a N/A 2.0L engine.

Since it's an easy install/uninstall I recommend they do a minimum of 3 runs with stock air filter and post results, and then 3 runs with the aftermarket filter.

Learn the googles. Someone has already done that.

Next we wanted to see what would happen if we just removed the factory filter, so we popped the hood and quickly removed the stock filter. One thing I will point out is that the factory air filter actually looks really really good, it has quite a bit of surface area and seem to be of super high quality, so we were impressed by that. But this is not a stock filter review, we are here to get some numbers! So we made a few more pulls with the factory air filter out of the box, and we got a maximum HP of 148 and max TQ of 114. We were hoping to see more gains out of this, but it seems like the power delivery was not as smooth, and while we did gain 1 horsepower overall, the majority of the time, we were actually under power compared to the stock filter. I am guessing this has to do with the way the air floes over the MAF sensor itself, and I do think having a filter in the box creates the proper air flow over the MAF. Now that was all done, we wanted to try out the new Apexi drop in air filter. Removing it from the box, you can instantly tell this will be a much better flowing filter than stock, and if not that, at least it is looks much better.

I think he meant to say you aren't going to get 5whp from just swapping out the filter, not running without a filter... depends on how you emphasize parts of the sentence.

I'm a little skeptical but the main power gains are where you would expect a higher flowing filter to make gains, above 6000 rpm. Maybe when they do the other two filters they will do more baseline runs before they swap out parts.

We will do more baseline runs the second time around.

Just picked up a k&n and am having difficulty getting it to fit. Which direction is the filter supposed to face?

If i remember correctly, the side of the filter that 'sticks out' should face the engine.

I had the same question. flip it the other way around. It's counterintuitive.

[QUOTE=d1ck;349787]When you pinch off the end of a hose you're creating what's called a nozzle which reduces the cross sectional area which the water has to flow through. This is why the velocity increases. You can determine the velocity through a known opening by doing the following:
[QUOTE]

Maybe I am wrong, but I beleive this is also called the "venturi effect"

not only does it create faster flow but it also increases the air pressure.
