Isn't it ironic. The suspension on the FD and NSX are closer to today's Formula 1 cars than the Cayman and the 86. Even the Miata got away from McPherson suspension in 1989. McPherson is great but for the best suspension geometry you really need A arms or the like. Porsche has proved how well they can make McPherson suspension handle.

Also ironic, is the front suspension on the 86 and Cayman is 65 year old technology.

But I agree about the rotaries. Dear fans of the rotary.. Mazda is now a company that makes money so don't get your hopes up for a rotary because it's damn near impossible for them to meet current emission and economy regulations and they don't sell.

Embrace SkyActiv, it's not a bad thing.
I want to reiterate this point.

I had a Dodge SRT8 Challenger...because of its shit gas mileage...there was like a $1,500 unavoidable gas guzzler tax.

The RX-whatever will have bad gas mileage...AND it will not pass CARB. That would limit where it could be sold.

I KNOW everyone here loves a sweet, well-tuned Rotary engine. They are seriously smooth and rev like crazy and sound great...

But have any of the people clamoring for a rotary actually owned one?

1.They last 75,000 miles if you are lucky.

2.They burn oil like a 2 stroke engine.

3.Apex seals go out if "things" happen (similar to point 1)

4.It can be hard to find a good mechanic who knows rotaries.

A rotary engine is like that hot girl you knew when you were younger who looked great then, but now that you are older, so is she...and the years of partying has not been kind.

Rotaries do not age well...

Mazda needs to MAKE money to be a successful business. Trying to "perfect" the rotary is probably a foolish endeavor. I would love for a eureka moment, but I just don't see it happening.

There is no such thing as a universal "sarcasm font" so unless we know you personally or you use some type of emoticon to help portray your intent, you simply come across as saying something stupid.. sarcasm doesn't translate all that well through simple text.

So my question is... what the hell happened to THIS?

and WHY WON'T YOU MAKE IT, MAZDA??? Are you MAD?

Seriously, I wouldn't even mind an inline 4 at 2.5 liters (the new Mazda6's engine would be an excellent choice, massaged for a little more power). It doesn't NEED a rotary... I'm just... I'm just... I have a lot of feelings right now.

What do you guys think?

Looks like the offspring of a Volkswagen beetle impregnated by a Nissan 350Z and the beetles genes were dominant.

That concept car looks like ass. The RX-7 and even the RX-8 were a million times better looking. It looks like something Kia would make.

With a piston powerplant, I might buy that over an FR-S/BRZ. It's not classically gorgeous, but it does look pretty damn cool to me.

Any case, the world needs MORE small lightweight rwd cars, so I'd LOVE for Mazda to build something like that.

I would trade my FRS in for this, man.

People say it looks ugly... well our cars are very plain-jane looking, so who are we to judge?

As I was saying in another thread, Mazda comes up with some nice ideas, I like the doors on the RX8 actually, not sure why we havent' seen more of those, I guess the Veloster sorta counts

Cars are hobbies not life commitments. Go buy a Prius or C6 Corvette or whatever other 'sensible' car appeals to you. I'll keep fantasizing about rust buckets and gas guzzling triangles.

Mazda! Y U NO make this instead of that ugly box in post 1!?

Seriously, a very mild refresh and this thing would be good to go. With at least two of those snail thingies. I heard they make cars go faster.

As long as you keep the rotary we can be friends, they're pretty reasonably priced for a 30 year old sports car, the 13B's seem to be going for around $10k in mint condition, the one above went for <$6k on ebay but it may be hiding something... I was so very tempted to bid on it.

i dont understand this part? also, fwiw, porsche often ditches the struts in race cars when its allowed and needed. with anything of this sort though, execution is always better than theory. there are front drive cars better than rear, mac struts better than double wishbone, carbs better than fuel injection etc.
