True. That is a difficult situation, indeed.

Don't let it take over you and make it end its suffering of being a mustang.

The better option is to assign the "star" to spend part of her week working with the other team to help up their skills with some selective bug fixes while allowing her to continue to work on the primo project she really has an interest in.

I was about to mention the assumption made that the hypothetical company had enough resources. Then I realized that even if the other "team" consisted of one person, your solution would likely still apply.

I remember a couple years ago when I went to the east coast (New Brunswick) to do my leadership course with the military and learned many a good lessons about how to be a leader and a role model. I had excellent Directing Staff for my section, some of the other sections weren't so lucky. By the second or third week of the course, the candidates were inspecting their own sections. One morning, my fire-team partner (or battle buddy, or assigned best friend, whatever) was the one who was carrying out the inspection. You check the soldier, the bunk, the locker and the personal weapon (can I even mention the gun on here?) anyways, inspection went fairly well, and was only the usual shit of "Your boots could use some more work", "Your bed making skills suck", "Your tunic that's hung in your locker has a small wrinkle", the little shit that you don't actually care about, you know? So, I think we were the first or second of the 4 sections to finish our inspection and we were shooting the shit, talking about plans for the upcoming weekend or whatever. I guess the sergeant (Also Directing Staff) in the room across the hall from us heard what we were talking about. He had an extreme hate for me, something about being a reservist, and being 22 while I was on the course rubbed him the wrong way. He immediately honed in on me and started to throw nearly everything out of my locker, starting with my dress uniform which went directly onto the floor. Then, grabbed my second set of combat boots which were freshly polished, they landed on my dress uniform and stained my tunic. Then, grabbed my dress boots (which are, well, were shined to a legit mirror finish) and looked at the soles of them. Asked me "Why didn't you polish the soles of the boots?" I replied with an honest "I didn't know you were supposed to" he then asked how long I'd been in for and after telling him 5 years, he let me know "Jesus fucking Christ, you don't deserve to be here" and tossed one boot into a cinder block wall, and then the other one down the hall. He is probably the biggest piece of shit that I have ever encountered anywhere in the military. The same guy who denied us our meal one night, because not all the troops were around while he sat around eating a full plate of food and having a coffee (for you American's, in the CAF, the troops eat before leadership). I was honestly ready to release from the course after that happened, because I didn't want to deal with that level of retardation for another 8 weeks. I had my memo all written up and ready to hand in. Happy I didn't though. 2 years later, and my unit is begging me to do my Gun Detachment Commander course so that they can promote me to sergeant. I just need to find the time. Too bad they only offer that course in the summer time, which directly conflicts with the busy season at my real job. Edit: I suppose that the real point to this, is that for whatever reason, you can never really remember the great leaders all that well. Probably because they enabled you to get the job done, and not hold you back in any way. Meanwhile, the shitty ones can ruin your entire existence. |

The good ones would say "how about we bring the team over to fix this quickly and then get back to this fancy fun stuff" and they'd get it done in 2 months or less. |
