From what others have shared with me on the forums with concerns about size on exhaust:

2.5" is sufficient upwards of 350-400 whp. 3" past that from people testing high HP turbos.

I don't know about you, but I don't plan on reaching that much HP anytime soon. I think 2.5" will be plenty sufficient for probably 95% of drivers.

Yea unless you're going for massive hp the gains won't be that significant beyond 2.5". I'm waiting a while until i turbo to replace my exhaust, hopefully there will be more options for custom setups by then. Looking for a 3" dump pipe and front pipe into a tapered 3-2.5" midpipe. From what i've heard having the larger diameter also helps reduce egt due to better heat dissipation properties of the larger diameter.

For people looking for this info....
My car came with a TRD cat back and I'm installing my new nameless front pipe.
About 1 3/4" ID..... Way under 2"...... even the OD is under 2"...
My new nameless front pipe is 2 1/4" ID so 3/4" larger......
May be why top end doesn't seam to get better...
My header add lots of mid range but didn't seam to add much top end, I think because of the restrictive stock and trd exhaust..
I'll be getting a new cat back...

made some more accurate measurements...

The TRD cat back has a muffler and a resonator.
After the resonator is good 57mm 2 1/4 pipe OD, not bad.

The bad part is before the resonator 51mm 2" OD pipe with a flange ID inside the pipe of only 45mm 1 3/4".

So don't think I would buy this cat back, too many better options for less....

Yes! The TRD mid pipe is the same size as a stock exhaust from the resonator back to the muffler. The muffler is MUCH less restrictive than stock. However for some reason (sound tuning, emissions, car tuning?), the ID from the front flange to the resonator is constricted compared with stock.

Because I was getting some drone from my TRD at certain speeds, I considered having a muffler shop splice the stock mid-pipe from the front flange through the stock resonator to the rest of the midpipe of the TRD. That way I would have a quieter resonator and larger mid-pipe combined with the cool TRD muffler. In the end, after nearly three years of use, I sold my TRD intake and exhaust and put the stock back on with a K&N air filter insert. Much quieter and still runs well.

@shr133 is right. I compared the TRD, stock, and Magnaflow cat-backs a few years ago, with pics (it is around the site somewhere). The TRD is considerably SMALLER than stock from the cat pipe to the muffler.

Yep. I run 240hp gas/310hp e85 with all stock exhaust and JRSC with TRD D shape cat back. My tuner (founder of delicious tuning) said i would get 10 more HP if I went back to stock cat back. TRD is smaller diameter. They cut them up years ago. Probably when this thread started.

I switched to the speed factory V1 and nameless front pipe with 200 cell cat.
At cruise it is quieter than the TRD with the stock cat and resonator, but is louder over 2800rpm but, not crazy...
