Yeah, make fun of the plain aluminum ball all you want. Then check out what classic sports cars used for the last 75 years.

You can go ahead and put in lighted, fringed, Mil-spec, JDM, carbonfiber/whale foreskin, Caitlyn Jenner shaped, Fast and Furious inspired, race spec, tuner approved knob if you want.

Its all about personal style.

Mine looks like a trailer hitch, yours looks like a douche nozzle, or at least an indicator of one.

Bakelite, wood, leather, plastic, or a combination of those. Aluminum or steel was very rarely used as a stock knob in any car.

Many, many race cars used a spun aluminum ball or white bakelite.

Race cars use aluminum yes. Stock shift knobs not so much. Race cars use a lot of things that stock cars don't though.
To be clear I have no issue at all with round aluminum knobs and was just countering the statement that they are common on "classic sports cars for the last 75 years". They are not common and are actually a relatively rare item as an OEM fitting. Bakelite is the most common old style and plastic and leather (or fake leather) the most common new one.

I'm currently using an Anarchy Motive Atlas knob in transparent red. It looks great, but in hindsight I kind of wish I got the rough red because I think I prefer the textured feel instead of plain metal.

These knobs are $60 without engraving:

For those with suicidal tendencies or the need to break the habit of grabbing the shifter in a whole hand death grip.

Well, let's see here, I can't reach back 75 years, but I can reach back 68 years.

I had an uncle that had a 1950 MG TD.

I had a neighbor that had a 1950s some Porsche

I had a 1970 MGB

My brother had a 1974 TR6

To the best of my recollection, none of them had a metal shift knob ......

Maybe you have some examples for us ..... ??

Yep, it's a slow day in Puyallup .....
