I carpool 40 minutes to work with 3 other coworkers on a regular basis. 2+2 is a necessity.

You know, I'm really curious if this actually makes any difference at all for insurance. I know it's "common knowledge", but I'd be curious to hear from an actual insurance agent. I recently changed insurance companies for my cars, and strangely enough, I actually pay slightly more for the property damage coverage on my 2007 Outback than I do on my '06 Cayman S, and although the comp/collision coverage is more expensive on the Cayman, it's actually not as much more expensive as I would have expected (it isn't even double, even though the Cayman is definitely worth more than three times as much as the Outback). The overall cost is only about 25% more for the Cayman, which seems to go against the common knowledge for insurance costs, but I'll be the first to admit that I know very little about how this sort of thing is actually determined...

It ain't about insurance, folks (myth is stronger than ever, it seems). It's about broader appeal. 2+2 is just way more practical for most people. I very nearly got an RX-8 instead of the S2k for that reason.
I do wish they would make a 2-seater based on the 86. Not simply deleting the back seats, but moving the engine, trans, firewall, windshield, and front-seaters aft a good 20" or so. That would make for a lighter car with better weight distribution. IMO there's room in the marketplace for both. |

A two seater with a hatchback = yum! As it is I drive with the rear seat down. I can never see putting it up as I have a second car for passengers.

So although I use the backseat once every couple of months, I always put leave it up just for the noise alone. |

The 2+2 coupe configuration makes this car just practical enough to have as a second car if you have kids, but still want to take it to the track/autocross.
It also gives you enough interior room to stuff a set of trackday tires/wheels in the back, plus tools, drinks, etc.

Good question. I don't know as I've never run with it up. If it is making more noise I'm used to it as the car is quieter than the Miata it replaced.

Glad Toyota went with 2+2, otherwise my kids would have to ride in the trunk. Seriously, seats three fine. Passenger just slide their seat forward. That was my magic number had to seat three.

I chose 2+2 in the poll for the cheaper insurance reason.
On my car I pulled the bottoms of the seats out, pulled the rear seat belts out, and keep the back folded down permanently. Best of both worlds IMO. |

I would not own my BRZ if it was a 2 seater. Would be in a WRX. Car seats has been in the back from the day I bought the car. I actually don't know what that back right seat looks like. LOL.

I personally like the 2+2 but if we swapped the trunk for a hatch...

I agree with the majority here and preferred the 2+2. If this car wasn't 2+2 at a minimum I wouldn't think of buying it, a primary reason I didn't bother with a Mazda MX-5 because of its insistence on being a 2 seater roadster. I'm also a shorter driver so...I actually can make use of those rear seats as my parents are shorter than I am. The test drive I made sure my dad was comfortable in the back and he was, salesman wasn't but he's taller than both of us. Now as for the trunk...I would have preferred a hatch in the same vein as the RSX and 7th gen Celica, more practical without changing the looks.
