A 4 cylinder with 250 horsepower doesn't make any sense for a Supra. First of all, the GT86 is already a 4 cylinder, and with any luck, the second generation should be outputting at least 250 hp (and it probably needs to with all of the upcoming competition targeting it).

What makes more sense is an N/A 6 cylinder (whether V6 or I6) with similar power to the 370Z (330+ bhp), and a single or twin turbo 6 cylinder with similar power to the Corvette and GTR (450+ bhp).

I could also see them releasing a third version after a couple of years into development, much like the way Chevy does with the Corvette and ZR1, with either a bigger turbo(s) or an additional hybrid motor(s), outputting over 500 bhp.

It really all depends on what their competitive targets are for this car, and what they need to do in order to compete with those cars. In that sense, a 4 cylinder with 250 hp just doesn't make any sense. I realistically cannot see the Supra coming with a powertrain that delivers under 300 bhp in this day and age. This isn't 1993; even the V6 Mustang is making over 300 bhp these days.

But honestly... I'd like to see the FT-1/Supra come with a n/a V6 base model, n/a V8 mid-range model, and twin turbo V8 top-end model.

EDIT: Small V8's btw, like 4.2L, but with all of the best engine technology available; DOHC, Hybrid Injection (PI/DI), VVTL-i, the works.

I'm hoping that the MKV will be the same! Easy to make gobs of power, and easy to drive!
We just need turbo builders to make more Turbos with Variable Turbo technology.

FT-1 Based Supra And “Sub-86″ Sports Car Confirmed For Production

Well, here it is! Let the assumptions begin.

Quote:
February 10, 2014

Entry-level sports coupe could cost around $16,000 USD

It seems the Toyota FT-1, revealed in Detroit, isn’t bound to the world of concept cars for long. Motoring.com.au is reporting the Toyota concept sports car is definitely headed to production with the Supra nameplate and could get a very interesting powertrain.

Citing inside sources, the Australian outlet says a Supra is in development and could cost “under $100,000 (AUD)”. The base model would get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine shared with the upcoming Lexus NX while a top-trim version of the Supra would receive an electrically-assisted 2.5-litre six-cylinder with an output of over 400 hp. It’s also said to be equipped with an LFA-style rear transaxle.

The new Supra will be derived from the FT-1 concept but will be much softer in its appearance. It’s being developed by a new sports car division within Toyota headed by Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the Toyota FT86/Scion FR-S.

Toyota isn’t just focused on the top-end of the sports car ladder. The publication is also reporting Toyota is working on a “sub-86″ sports car that could see a sticker price of around $16,000 USD.

This new, yet unnamed model could receive a hybrid setup mated to a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. It’s unknown if the speculated powertrain would send motivation to the front or rear wheels.

It's a proud decade to be a Toyota owner. Exciting things in the works and that concept was off the effing chain.

Is there a massive advantage in these electric-assisted engines? I like the sound of 400hp. Just not sure how I feel about the soul of the car being half-electric. If there was a literal decrease in gas fill ups then I'm game. I understand there's a lower end version, just curious.

Toyota is literally going to feed the aftermarket perfect platforms.

HIGHLY doubt they will offer a variant with a 4 cylinder. I highly doubt there will be engine options for this until at least a few years in and it sounds like wild speculation to me. This is intended as a halo car, so my gut tells me they will treat it as such. Having lower performance variants really cheapens the model.

400hp will be the number.
6 cylinders
Rwd

It is time to implement hybrid power into this halo car. But I do not see it happening for the first gen of this car as none of the lexus performance cars have utilized it.

I believe this will be on par with the m3 BMW

Are you txsupra11 on SF?

Because I was just on the SF FT1 thread and I saw both this post and that post get posted within a minute of each other. I freaked out because I was amazed with how quickly news travelled from one forum to another...

But then I figured you must be the same person...

Beautful pictures btw!

I'm hoping as the hood is clearly designed with an I-6 in mind. The designers even said as much. They do say they do not know what will actually get shoved in there though.
