Torque spec for lug nuts

Is the torque spec for the lug nuts really 89 ft-lbs?

It sounds right to me being that they use the metric system. It's the same for me at work. Wheels get torqued to around 120Nm depending on the vehicle.

general rule is about 90ftlbs. Most people overtighten the crap out of their wheel nuts. You shouldnt have to labour like mad to get them off.

Pretty much every other Toyota model (save for M14 models like Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser), use 76ft-lbs, but the FR-S uses Subaru studs with a finer thread pitch. 89ft-lbs is correct, as was mentioned.

As a general rule I torque the lug nuts on all of my cars to 90 ft-lbs, been doing so for around 20 years, no problems.

Don't worry if you service at the dealer you will get at least 200 ft/lb. More is better right?

I have been an 85 ft/lb guy for awhile. I know when working at a local tire and lube place that most cars were either 100 or 85 ft/lb with a few less than that such as Hondas I believe. Most trucks were also in that 100 ft/lb area except for the heavier duty trucks with thicker studs that went up to 140 ft/lb I believe.

Would the torque spec for aftermarket lug nuts and aftermarket wheels also be 89 ft-lbs. I ask because I have some mcgard lug nuts and volks, and when removing the lug nuts after they have been torqued to 89 ft-lbs they squeal and make a lot of noise.

These nuts use a key/spline driver, so maybe that is increasing torque beyond 89 ft-lbs...I'm not sure.

But in short...would 89 ft-lbs apply to any wheels/lug nuts? And is that squealing noise normal? (It doesn't happen for me with the stock wheels/lug nuts.)

Aftermarket lug nuts have different specs, so just make sure you go by that if you are not using stock lugs.

These are the lugs/locks I'm using, McGard SplineDrive 65554BK:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/McGard-65554BK-Chrome-SplineDrive-Installation/dp/B0006HOVNE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349306169&sr=8-1&keywords=mcgard+65554BK"]McGard 65554BK Chrome/Black SplineDrive Wheel Installation Kit (M12 x 1.25 Thread Size) - For 5 Lug Wheels : Amazon.com : Automotive[/ame]

On the McGard website for just general installation instructions, it says: "Tighten lug nuts in a progressive crisscross pattern to the recommended installation torque found in your vehicle owner's manual." And "Using the McGard key and a wrench, tighten each lock to the torque specified in your vehicle owner's manual."

So this seems to be saying just to go with the 89 ft-lbs.

Ok on those you are good. I know the Rays, Project Kics, Muteki etc have different specs, so just double check depending on the brand.
