"gah FRS/BRZ are so slow, if only they had like 50 more hp"

Does it bother anyone else when reading other blog sites about the twins, and ALL the comments go like this? "gah FRS/BRZ are so slow, if only they had like 50 more hp" It annoys me to no end.

I think what people perceive is the lack of midrange torque. What they really want is about 20-30 more lb-ft through the midrange, not 50 peak hp.

Remember people complained to no end about the S2000, which had 240 hp (but the powerband was even more high up at 6-9k rpm).

Most of this can be fixed by driving technique (i.e., keep this engine above 4500 rpm), but not everyone knows or is willing to drive like that.

The younger the owner the less satisfied they are with the hp. They haven't been in cars long enough to know what progress is. I remember my '71 Corvette was considered fast. My '87 Carrera was considered fast. My FR-S is within a few tenths of those two cars when doing 0-60 yet people who have not driven long enough to make comparisons consider the car slow. It only makes me laugh.

No. All my dream cars are on paper slower than the FRS, so I don't really have a problem with it.

I wont' lie. If Subaru or Toyota had offered an STI version of this car that had an additional 40-50hp and 30-50ft lbs of torque I would have spent the money to buy it. That said, I 100% knew what I was buying and I felt the strengths of the car far outweighed the negatives. 90%+ of the time the stock power is more than adequate and I really don't want/need more power. There are times that I do wish it had more, but I am not committed to going aftermarket to get there. Yet....

Woot! That! If the FR-S/BRZ hadn't come along, I'd still be dumping money into vintage Fiats, Lancias and Alfas. At least now I don't need to worry about my car rusting to bits around me when I drive in the rain. :-)

This. Coming from a GTI, I definitely miss the torque in the low/mid but it's just been an adjustment to keep the car around 5K during spirited driving. I think what most people miss is the effortless feeling of acceleration (hitting the back of the seat) by slamming the accelerator with high torque cars that doesn't come with the 86 as it smoothly climbs the RPMs.

HP is no big deal to me, but 30 more ft/lbs of torque would be spot on. Especially coming out of corners.

Most people that own this car never drive it in the hills, canyons and other places where the road twist and turns like a snake with its head cut off. They drive the car in towns and cities where driving is from one stop light to the next and the big excitement is blasting up the freeway on ramp once or twice a day or drifting around a cul-de-sac.

No wonder they cannot understand why cars like the FR-S, BRZ, MX-5, s2000 and MR-S can all be glorious to drive without more than 200WHP.

Yeah, this car is definitely not a stop light racer. If you want one of those cars then buy a big old American muscle car...
