I'm not sure if I would want major engine work done on a new car or even a new engine. I would hate for that to show up on the car fax when I go to sell it.

Still waiting for the dealership to get my parts. They said they should be in tomorrow.

Another Update

I just got a call from Scion Customer service. I would urge you guys to call them and explain what is going on with your car. They opened a case for me and the rep told me that they've heard a few of these, but that the service department is getting the most calls from Toyota Techs that are scratching their heads with these codes.

He also told me that the engineers have at least 1 fix that is being filtered down. I almost immediately got a call from the dealership saying they had been instructed by regional managers to order a VVTI cam gear and oil control valve for cars with these P0017 - P0019 codes. It will take 1 week to order and repair.

They have also taken note of the loud chirp, and the engineers are working on it.

So I am getting a rental car for a week since the dealership ran out of loaner cars.

That's what they ordered for mine let's see if it works. When I brought the car in about a month ago for an entire laundry list of things they said Toyota was discussing a silencer or shield for the chirp. I also opened a ticket for the shifter knob and shifter rattle.

Also got an email from my friend at Toyota Japan. He confirmed that the leading theory for the chirp was that US and Australian gasoline doesn't have the same makeup and quality as japan's does, which is causing the issue. I'd be interested in more info about that sound shield you are talking about, Yruyur.

Idle issue seems separate though, hopefully these parts fix it.

If this is the case, which is sounding more and more likely, it seems mind boggling to me that they didn't extensively test the car using the gas sold in the markets where the car was to be sold. Or even better, look at the markets where the car is sold, and then test it using the worst "premium octane" gas available, complete with 10% ethanol. Verify it's OK using the worst, and be confident that it will then be A-OK using better gas. I'm no automotive engineer but that seems like a no brainer.

Actually, the real cause is: The sensor on your gas cap is extremely sensitive. You just need to unscrew it. Then screw it back on until you here the small click that is fully sealed. Soon after, drive around the block (7 - 15 minutes), then park. Turn the car off, and turn it back on. Voila, sensor is back to its proper, working function.

The reason it does that is due to the car being so light, so a lot of the shifts in transmission(s) is/are felt among the gas cap sensor (this sensor is very, very sensitive).

Anyway, I suggest that you drop the rental, get your FR-S back, and be excited that it is just a sensor "sensitivity" issue!

I wish that were the case. I checked my gas cap several times, engine still stalled out on me. The tech who was working on my car said that they were instructed by high level service techs and engineers that this was a defect which needed replacement parts. Judging by the frequency of these issues with other members, I would hope that this is the solution.

Strange... I was told when I got my vehicle that this is the only issue thus far. I did run into it this morning, but it got solved with the solution. No issues since.

Glad you aren't having any issues. If you do get that light again, or any rough idling or strange RPM dips, get it to the Toyota service center. I think they've finally started distributing more than just whispers to their service techs.

My parts are in and they are being installed. They said they are installing a new ecu as well. They said the ecu change is related to this issue and not the day time running lights tsb. I asked to inspect the vvti gears that were pulled. I'll take pics.
