86 AT vs 86 MT

I did some basic modeling on the acceleration differences between the MT and AT for the twins.

-The MT has a slight advantage over the AT through all gears. The difference in 1st gears is ~1ft/s^2 delta. This is a fairly small difference.

-It looks like shifting at redline is going to give max acceleration. Except the 4th to 5th. But, the crossover is so small I would still use redline.

-I like how the AT goes through 60mph in 2nd, unlike the manual.

-You can see the slight weight advantage (really, really small) by comparing 5th MT and 4th AT.

-No, these cars do not top out this fast. No energy losses are accounted for in this model. I think some where in the 140s would be top speed, based on the 200hp.

Added:
The time to MPH chart. It looks like the MT has a slight edge on the AT after 60mph. But, I think this is too close to claim one is really faster than the other.

The model used the following information:
1. Inside-Line dyno chart, at the wheel torque curve
2. Toyota/Subaru published gear ratios, final drive, weight specs.
3. Tire rack - Michelin HP tire specs (revs/mile, & diameter).

Model was a method to normalize to acceleration.

I do have some time-to-speed graphs based on this model. But, since there are so many key variables missing, it would not give an accurate time to speed. I think this is better for relative comparisons. I will post the graph of time to speed a little later today.

Really wish the manuals had a taller 2nd gear. I've never had an issue with hitting the rev limiter until this car

I don't, it would make city driving in 2nd gear much shittier.

If you want that slightly taller gearing for 60mph in 2nd, up your tire profile 1 size or get a tune that raises the RPM a bit.

I added the time to MPH chart to the first post. Keep in mind this is for comparison only, and does not represent the time to get to a certain speed. The start is not from 0, but ~11mph.

Taller gearing to reach 60 mph (without changing redline) means a longer gear and less torque down low...

basicly it would be much too easy to bog the engine in 2nd.. I had a WRX that didn't like it AT ALL anywhere under 2000 RPM, it would shake the entire drivetrain, so I had to downshift in 1st and it sucks just driving around...or you go around the corner faster
