HOW TO: Remove Airbag and Steering Wheel
Here's a shot of the removed airbag
Before you do anything, let's remove the fuses so you don't piss anyone off honking the horn accidentally 50 times and/or screwing something up and blowing the airbag unintentionally. The fuses circled in red need to be removed, they are all horn related fuses and are also pictured on the fusebox cover diagram. First you'll need to go the side of the steering wheel, there are 4 holes on each side but it's the bottom 2 you should be working on. There is a metal pin if you look inside the holes. You need to grab a screwdriver or something similar and push that pin inwards of the steering wheel, while simultaneously pulling the airbag. Do this to each pin on both sides and pull the airbag out, it is semi-difficult. Gave me a bit of trouble. Now unattach the plugs from the steering wheel. Now it is off the steering wheel YOU ARE DONE REMOVING THE AIRBAG! To remove the steering wheel there is a nut in the dead center of the steering wheel. Remove that and it should pop off. Or screw off. Not sure of the socket size though .

You should find out if the scion emblem is the same size as the Toyota airbag emblems. If that's the case then you just gotta superglue (or some other really strong adhesive) it back on.

I need to see a finished product because the last picture you showed (with the Plasti Dip not cured) look terrible.
If it were me, I'd try to find a Toyota emblem that fits inside that recess and just try to even out the pin holes in the airbag cover. |

Thanks for the DIY. I don't know about the candy red paint and Toyota emblem but these steps will help for the JDM steering wheel cover swap. :happy0180:

Why not? Seems like a decent alternative to buying the $800 GT86 airbag........ If you don't like it, don't post.

Well as we all know, plastidip isn't the strongest substance, it rubs right off. Also, there was an emblem there before, I think I'd prefer a Toyota emblem going through my forehead over a Scion one.

The good news is this is my only crazy DIY mod, I am not one of those people that go and paint and mod every single thing, and then there's the plastidip crowd that sprays everything. I am just fully rebadging the car with Toyota. The only other appearance mods are HID's and the Five Axis kit and wheels. It's going to be a clean car I promise!

I do love me some PlastiDip. I've got another 5 gallons on order and am nearly done peeling the first dip job off the BRZ. I bought a better HVLP gun and am looking forward to laying on that vinyl look.

I think I might do something similar. But I might find a good sticker or maybe even a custom vinyl to place in the oval before you put in the plasti-dip. Not sure how it would turn out exactly but thanks for showing your work.
