ROFL. Thanks for this.

I need to do the math on what the 5.12 set would do in an auto at 75 MPH. Wondering how livable it would be. I plan to eventually go FI and turbo would certainly love the long stock gearing, but I'll be bolt-on only for a few years and would love to throw some gear at it just to be a stoplight hooligan.

Would a tune be recommended for a bone stock car with a FD conversion? Or can I get away with just the conversion?

My old Boxster S once you shifted from 1 to 2nd....kept revs in the sweet power band and THAT is why it was SOO fast with only 265 CRANK and 2900 lbs, But with headers our cars have a nice fat power band from 4500-7000 that should be exploited for sure. Now more than ever I love short shifting my car like a fire truck ! 3500-4500 rpm shifts make S2000 guys roll their eyes !

Hi mates,

Sorry to necro; regarding the shims, I note you purchased all twenty two: which part number or clearance size did you end up fitting?

Putting a 2-way + 4.556 in and would prefer to have the shim ordered in advance!

Thanks

AJ

But, would you go shorter than 4.556 if given the opportunity?

I like that the 4.556 set is OEM Toyota parts but can't help wondering if shorter might be better for track use. All of my local road courses are fairly short (save for Road America) so any loss in top speed is inconsequential.

The 4.556 is from a MKIII Supra.

This post might help: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=24

doesnt work that way. Each car is different. A good tech wont even attempt to use one without measuring what is needed.

I think you have to back into this kinda mod and ask yourself...

" do I want to be tach-ing 4500 rpms' on the highway at like 65mph?.."

Right now I'm 80 and 4k with a top speed of 148. Once I am SC-ed I will hit that at the end of my straight at my local track. PERFECT !

My last car spun that with ease on the highway. I typically wore in-ear headphones on long trips since the exhaust drone was borderline damaging.

In 6th at 80 with a 4.556 you should be turning roughly 3700-3800 RPM depending on tire size. A 5.1 FD at 4000 RPMs in 6th should be going around 76 MPH. Both 76 and 80 are speeding around here so I'd probably err on the side of 76 anyway. I could live with 4000 Rs on 1-2 hour trips no problem.

I just hate to drop $800, R&R the pumpkin, and regret not going shorter.

Who makes a higher FD gear set than 4.556 besides MFactory's 4.67? Doesn't Cusco offer a 5.1 or am I imagining things? Anyone in the 4.8x/4.9x range?

I think for the average person.............the 4.55 works well. But yes a 5.1 is probably sick but remember that too short and now you are shifting constantly and thats slower laps etc. I can say after running my friend who I was side by side with prior to this upgrade that the in gear acceleration is improved enough that it was OBVIOUS to me it had been worth it. He is not on E85 and finally just as fast as me on pump. So the short path if on a budget is FD, Headers, ECUTEK tune and shave 100-150 lbs.

ORRR.....Forced Induction !

HA!

Ahh, shifting frequency... didn't consider that. Besides lap times that's X percentage of extra wear, which at the track can add up.

If you pulled away and it was obvious then an OEM 4.56 gear set sounds like a solid choice.
