Anyone ever seen some crap like this?!
So the end cap of the lug came off and it's free spinning, but it's hanging on to the last thread or something and won't come off! I've pulled off hundreds, maybe 1000 wheels and never came across anything like this.
Tried pulling on it with vice grips, pulling the wheel against it to put pressure on the back while turning. It will not come off! |

Hundreds? Ok, for giggles, let's say 200 wheels and assume you've been driving for 20 years. That's still ten wheel changes a year.
Thousands? Can you tighten the nut? Is the lug spinning in the hub?

I didn't say on this car, or even my own vehicles. I was a ground support equipment mechanic in the Air Force for 10 years...I've pulled a few wheels off.
No it won't tighten, and no the wheel stud isn't loose. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |

You'll have to replace that lug so might as well start drilling. Unless someone else has a better idea, I'd start drilling out the center of the lug until it gets thin enough to break off with a light yank of the opposite end of the wheel.

Hmm .. from pic slightly seems that thread on stud is also stripped. May need exchange too.

That's exactly what it was like when my studs got stripped, not unheard of for this car. I just kept blasting mine with an impact driver until all the threads turned to goo.
DIY: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21563 Hypothesis about why they fail: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106898 Personal opinion, gotta be super careful taking the wheels on and off, I think the studs pick up crud easily and if you slide the wheel on the threads and hear a grating noise boom they're contaminated, gotta be more careful with this one than your typical car for some reason. Some people have zero problems despite heavy heavy usage, I think they're either lucky or very diligent due to past experience (and hence why they beat on this car so much). I switched to ARP studs and they've been pretty good for over a year now. Here's what one of mine looked like after I got it off: It's odd though, that stud doesn't look OE, and that nut definitely isn't. Are you running a spacer that has it's own studs in it like this? |

That nut might be OEM. "So the end cap of the lug came off" - if it's "broke off"

They are stock length ARP studs and oem nuts. The end just broke off after I hit it with the impact. I tried hitting the crap out of it with the impact but still nothing. It's so loose I can blow on it to turn it. Still won't come off. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |

If the aftermarket lugs are even a little longer than the oem ones, there is a risk of the cap nut bottoming out.
Then the end of the lug gets buggered, the cap cracks open, blah blah blah... Not saying this is what happened for sure but it's something to keep in mind.

That's all I would've done. I bet they're fine. You can look for fretting on the corners of the other lugs and inside the caps.

So I got it off by hitting it with the air hammer, pushing it back until it caught some threads, then pulling as hard as I could while turning off the nut. Had to do that 3 times before it finally popped off. Fun times.
Replaced the stud, then pressure washed them all off to remove any dirt or metal, used the air chuck to blow dry, then carefully installed wheels without scraping as I slid it on. No issues now. But what a PITA. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk |
