I'll try not to be bias here, but do you really prefer the BMW over the FR-S?

Unless you really want the BMW, I would say go for the new FR-S if you're indifferent about which one to get; you'll get a warranty, and it won't rape your wallet whenever you need to get the car serviced, or replace any parts. You'll get to do the break-in period and know exactly how your car has been driven and cared for.

But again - if you're indifferent about the cost of maintenance and the lack of a warranty, then just get which one you want. Did you test drive either of them yet? They're quite different cars to feel totally indifferent as to which one you want other than going with the internet-forum consensus of what other people want you to get.

But honestly, I'd do Lexus if I was in this guy's shoes. If you can swing an ISF go for it. If not, an IS350 should be it.

Any luxury mark will give an air of money / income which never hurts your chances with the ladies, but, a car in and of itself will not attract. Spend some time at the gym and read up on a book called "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists" by Neil Strauss.

The type of chicks you'd pick up with a BMW aren't the type you would want to stay with for very long, your wallet would probably agree.

The twins always seem to have a group of dudes all around them. Though of course I see no issue with this.

You seem like you want a status symbol though, so go for the BMW. Have fun with those maintenance costs!

Just make sure you compare operating costs so you know what you're getting into. An M3 is going to cost a lot more to keep up than an FR-S, and the initial purchase price is of course higher, too. You get what you pay for usually, but the FR-S does offer an awful lot of smiles per gallon!

Honestly if I had to do all over again and both were NEW I'd go M3 again but in the OP's used scenario I would go FR-S even knowing how much fun I had in the M3. I just couldn't justify owning the used and possibly abused M3 outta warranty over this FR-S that I NOW know is an absolute barell of fun.

A 5yo BMW is a ball-and-chain. I've owned BMWs and Audi's and can advise you against owning one that is not 100% under factory warranty and then dumped. I was once on a first-name basis will the 3 service guys at my BMW dealer, and each trip cost me at least a grand. As for Audi, my A4 started to nickle and dime me to death after the warranty period and then mercifully lost oil pressure one day and blew-up. Don't do it man!

Don't feel like reading the thread so I'll reiterate the point many have already made.

Most of us considered BMW for at least a minute but the cluster of reasons drove us away including but not limited to:

Design focus: the BMW is a luxury car and has all the weight and compliance built in to give the owner a 'luxurious ride' while the FRS is a sports car designed for driving performance
Used car = unknown history, 5k miles between high quality oil changes or 20k at jiffy lube?
Can you even find the car you want at a price you're willing to pay? Scion has them sitting on lots or you can wait a month or two for one delivered.
BMW reliability vs. Toyota/Subaru
BMW maintenance costs vs. Toyota/Subaru
BMW replacement part costs vs. Toyota/Subaru


Sure there's other stuff but those are the big ticket dollars and sense bullet points, good luck.

My take:

BMW M3 only consideration. It must be priced =< new FR-S, must have clean car fax, must have service records, must be in excellent shape, must have less than 70K miles.

Any other scenario than what is described above I get the FR-S.
