Just picked up a Lenovo Z580 myself so I have something to use when I'm not home. I have my dedicated gaming computer when I'm home.
It's on sale from Newegg for $429. Only concern is on-board graphics, but, for the price, can't really complain. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834246614

As far as dell quality goes, I've been using a dell laptop for about 8 years now. I need to format and reload windows and I had to reflow the solders on the power input but otherwise it works great. Keep in mind this laptop has about two years of sea time, and navy sea time is not easy on electronics.

^^ True that. I got an Asus G51 when it came out because I was moving to Guam and I thought it'd be neat to have a beefy laptop to replace my gaming desktop.
With great power comes ... a short battery life and your lap set on fire. As far as the AW goes, that 1366x768 resolution will get on your nerves. I guess that's best for the speed of the hardware of a gaming laptop, but man you'll hate living with it on the run. Personally, I'd just get a netbook with an nvidia chipset and throw in a nice ssd on your own.

That's the one thing my Lenovo needs, is an SSD. Though, I need a bigger capacity one, and those are still quite expensive. Guess I could velcro a small external hdd to the back of the screen like the early Asus EEE pc users did.

The y580 is in supply shortage. At least that is what they told me. I ordered mine on October 2nd. The expected delivery date is Nov. 1.

By SSD you guys mean solid-state drives rather than hard-drives (HDD) right? Is this choice due to reliability, because laptops move around and HDD have higher failure rates?
I have only experienced one hard drive failure in a laptop and it was 15 years ago. My desktops have always been the ones that crap out. Pretty sure my Asus has a regular HDD. Commence computer tech 101. @Dadhawk get in here. :happy0180: |

SSD's are hands-down faster.
You can do some RAID wizardry using budget disk-drives to get even remotely comparable numbers, but then you're talking space and power usage that the SSD laughs at. Also the reliability is usage specific. If you only ever use your laptop while it is completely stationary and level, then traditional drives are just as reliable. But most people are idiots so they'll play soccer while watching gay porn and shit, tilt them, angle them, work on a bus, a train, a water-raft, you name it. SSD doesn't care about that, hence the perceived benefit of improved durability. They consume less power for their speed output, you can get some high efficiency standard drives but they are slow. Their only real downside is their cost, but what can you do. I wouldn't even bother looking at a laptop right now that didn't come with an SSD, it's the most essential part of it i would say.
