Trans or clutch knocking sound (video)

[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjtjed16SS0[/ame]

Is this the sound anyone else has after switching trans oils?

- During idle, nothing.
- After idle and at stops during a commute knocking sounds.
- Loudest with AC running Clutch in, gone. Clutch out, back 30K miles
- 2.3qt Motul300
- 89-94F ambient
- Idle is not rough, there is no CEL, shifting is smooth, quiet, and feels amazing, better than stock feel. Just when its idle with the AC running tranny sounds like it has ice cubes in it.

Most people have said this sound is completely normal when changing stock trans oil to a different brand (especially going to GL-4/GL-5 when original fluid is GL-3), and that the stock gear oil is used to reduce these sounds.

A couple have said could be clutch related, or throw out bearing and they usually start to become noisy and need replacing. If its the TOB, and since its not covered on warranty because its a wear item, if I'm going to have someone taking the trans out for $800 to replace a $50 part, would it make since to just go ahead with a clutch upgrade/flywheel while I'm at it?

Just looking for piece of mind. I'm just still not used to the idea of a sound that sounds terrifying, yet its completely harmless.

Phew! Thought I was going to have to find some of my previous posts.

As long as it doesn't whine while you're on the gas, you're golden.

Oh, be patient, ol "gear rollover" @Ultramaroon will be along later ..

Story time.

Monday we took our FR-S on a drive up on Mt Rainier. All week I had been reading about spun rod bearings and TOBings going bad. On the first long, hard pull, I swear I heard a knocking from the engine, or was it a pinging??

OMG, it's number 3 rod bearing, but maybe its the TOB, but maybe the piston skirt is slapping against the cylinder wall … but at altitude, the 92 octane gas should not be pre detonating

Oh well, so be it .. stranded on Mt Rainier .. we have extra water .. someone will find us before we starve to death .. then mrs humfrz snaps me out of it by yelling at me "are you going to pay attention to driving this car OR keep dinking around with the GoPro ?? (which is mounted on the dash).

Now, by overthinking all this shit, I was about to wreck up my drive around the mountain ..

THE END

Flywheel chatter, gear lash whatever you wanna call it. Normal. You really want something to complain about, go with a lightweight flywheel

Beautiful mountain. Spent five days at the Paradise Inn with the wife for our honeymoon last August. We had some sort of cheap Chevy compact for a rental. Would've been some great driving roads in another car.

I guess I got lucky when I switched the transmission oil to Motul. Didn't have any of these sounds. I could see myself getting a little paranoid hearing that.
