FR-S still had the stock prius tires... the gti comes with better and wider stock tires.... equal tires the FR-S would have had a better lap time.

My good friend owns a gti with suspension work (shocks, springs, sways, alignment), reflash, intake, etc... he drove my FR-S with 225 AD08's on it and said it had WAY more grip and much nicer handling than his gti. His GTI would walk me in the straights but in the corners it was no contest.

I have to agree the GTI is a better (well, lets say more practical) daily driver... my buddy can fit his road bike in the hatch without taking off the front wheel (he is 6' tall so it's not a tiny frame). Even so, if he did not have 2 young children he would have gotten an FR-S or BRZ.

Australian here.

I've got a lot of English and Irish mates and it's a constant battle to get them to see past the default "jap crap" mentality. They're unashamedly bias when it comes to Euro cars - particularly anything German. They think U.S cars are poorly-made tanks and asian made cars are either boring or in the case of the Koreans - cheap and nasty. They're some of the funniest guys I know but when it comes to cars - that's what they've been told so that's what they're going to believe.

I make the point because this reviewer just does not like the FRS at all and I think it has more to do with it being a Toyota than anything else. Obviously the review is supposed to be a bit of fun but the U.S reviewer tries hard to make balanced and whimsy, where as the British reviewer just comes across as sour and negative.

As for my 2 cents; I've driven both the 86 and the Golf Gti here in Australia and I they're both fantastic cars. I nearly bought the Golf on the exhaust pop alone but I've ended up ordering an 86 because it offers more feel, has a better reputation for build quality (VW has a terrible reputation for quality here in Aus) and is priced better. I know I'll end up in a 5 door hot hatch when I start replicating so why not have a bit of fun now!

they should have put the same tires on all three cars. I would bet money that the FR-S had the hardest tires.

give all the cars the same tires and I bet the FR-S would be on top.

Oh wow, the dude in the hat is a douche. Randy Pobst proved it was the faster, but because THEY couldn't make it faster it's the slower car? Soon as they started talking while he was driving the GTI I started brain cell loss...

This video is complete disaster in terms of analysis.

FR-S in good driver hands runs faster. But because THEY couldn't go faster, it's the slower car?

M3 is slowest of all of them and they Praise it and call it the Bench mark and say it's still the bench mark....WTF?

I think toyota and subaru really made a mistake not offering the twins with a high performance summer tire option. How many times have we seen this that an inferior car with better tires runs a faster lap time.

It's already been shown that the twins are significantly quicker with better rubber even in the stock size (quicker than mazdaspeed3 and wrx)

I agree with you 100%.
This argument about which is the better car is so dumb... maybe when you are on a professional level of driving you can have that opinion because one is faster than the other when driven to the limit. I hate when random people are like "this car sucks because it says so on paper and lap times proved that it is an inferior car." Like Tanuki said 90% of people who make fun of fwd cars never seen a track which is true and also I think that statement can be universal across the board when it comes to all platforms and horsepower.

That English guy is so retarded... that I had to turn off youtube.

My FR-S in Stock Class must be better than 61 other cars at my last SCCA Solo Event.
Actually it comes down who is the better driver and that is what my point I would say that single-minded Euro trash.

Why are there so many comments on this thread saying....

"Take that $7k extra and throw a turbo on and see which one is faster"

or

"Put better tires on the FR-S or same tires and its going to be faster"

People! It ALREADY is faster in stock trim than the GTI at this track. It was done by Randy and proven to be faster. These Noob drivers being slower in the FR-S does not dictate that it's the slower car.

Did Pobst drive the gti there. Because then your looking at a pro driver in the brz and an amateur in the gti.
