That's kinda why my dream is to get a MR2 Spyder and figure out how to get the 2zz-ge swap done...
Woudl love to go from the not-too-practical BRZ to the antithesis of all that is practical and reasonable with the MR2. A poor man's Elise indeed.

My 1st car was a 74 coupe manual. I loved that car. I was in the military in Florida in the late 70s. Sold it before I went back hone up north.

I loved my '05 Celica GT. No, it didn't have a 2ZZ engine but for being a daily driver, it was great on gas. If I had to choose my favorite generation, it would be in this order: 1st, 6th, 7th.

I love the 7th gen Celica. Practical, cheap, reliable and sporty. Jack up the rear tire pressure and drop the front and it felt like the wheel base shrunk; you could get it to rotate a bit with lift-off and trail braking. And also not unlike the Mini, the best feature... headroom! Loads of headroom with a high belt line and adjustable controls and well spacing makes it very easy for 6'4+ long torso folks to fit in one with a helmet on and be comfortable.

But in terms of charm/character - the Twins are in an another category over any 90s+ Celica (7th, 6th and 5th gen) I've driven.

That pic is distorted. The last Celicas were not any larger than previous generations except 1st gen, about the same size as the 86 and a bit lighter at ~2650 lb.
Here's a better pic:

LOL Ya I know. I was joking. First time I looked at the pic on my phone it was "WTF it didn't look like that in real life". Shows how pictures can be deceiving.

I remember the 84/85 Celica GTS being right at the top of my want list. There's an 84 (?) GT for sale in Exeter NH that I see sitting in the back of a local body shop. I actually stopped to check it out last summer and it's in reasonable shape considering the age. Doesn't look like that shop has had to do any significant work either. Next time I'm up there in a few weeks I could stop and get some details if anyone is interested.
