A kid from down the street was in my front yard checking out my car. So, I went outside. The kid picks up a pine cone and starts drawing on my car in the dust. I yell, "Hey Kid, Don't do that!" He keeps doing it. I advance towards the kid and say "Stop doing that Please!" He bashes the pine cone hard enough to break it in half on my car, then picks up another one and runs around my car rubbing it everywhere. He gets round my car and runs out of my yard. At that point his mom has walked down the street to find her son. And I'm yelling at the kid "Why would you do that?" His mom asks what he did, so I told her. She said she was going to keep a better eye on him. He is only nine years old, but is the same height and weight as me. (I'm small) My wife watched the whole "event" out the window; and said she was proud of me for being as calm as I was, for not cursing, and for not grabbing or touching the kid.

In the light, there are some scratches that I have not tried to buff out yet.

I mean WTF, go scratch your moms minivan!!!

I thought it was going to be a 2 or 3 year old! By 9 they should not have to keep a better eye on them to prevent vandalism.

I know right? The kid looks 12 or 13. He is big for his age. I asked his mom how old he was.

File a police report and send them a bill. You shouldn't have to do shit to fix those scratches, it's her problem

That totally and completely sucks.

I would not have hesitated to grab the kid and remove him from my property. Regardless of age, vandalism is vandalism, and you are within your rights to protect your property from anyone.

I suggest you contact the parents and ask them for the money to have the car detailed on the outside. Let the parents deal with the kid.

This.

You hate to punish the family, but it sounds like the parent shirked it off as "one of those things" and isn't teaching the kids responsibility or consequences.

My parents, and I'm sure a lot of yours, would have marched me back to apologize, then whooped my ass, and then would have offered to pay and made me do hours of labor to work it off.

I'm confident the officer would simply broker a deal where the offending kids parents will pay for damages in lieu of you pressing charges or whatnot. Getting an officer involved gives your demand some good pushing power

If you let it go without getting the law involved, there's a huge chance they just ignore it. People are jerks. The kid is a jerk because the mom is a jerk.
I have three times where people hit my car(not frs or they might be dead right now) and my van and all three I let it go without calling the police as
they said the would pay for it. The first lady hit me and I didn't call the police that time but she paid for the damages cash. The next two they blew me off.
I will not allow that to happen again since people are jerks...mostly.
