Is there any complications with doing a manual swap?

Hi guys I’m looking to do a manual swap on my car soon but before I went ahead and fullsend I was just wondering if there’s any complications/draw backs with doing this given it’s all installed correctly. Also any tips and advice you guys could give me. And lastly I am looking for a shop in SoCal that would do this in case I don’t end up doing it myself. Thank You Ahead of time! And Yes I rather do a manual swap than just sell my car and buy a new one. Love my build and it’s my first car ever so yeahhhh lol.

There is a lot more to doing the swap than you may think. It isn't just pull one out and throw the other in. I would price it out with a shop before hand since you may find it would be cheaper to just trade/sell the AT and buy a MT.

If you do it yourself it will be cheaper. Between taking the hit on the resell and the tax and registration of buying it again it adds up. But if your paying a shop to do it it’ll probably end up same cost or more in the end with the chance of having unforeseen issues pop up or the shop doing a half ass job.

Have you thought of building the AT trans? Stage 2 valve body, and clutch pack can hold tons of power. High stall torque converter can still launch around 3k.

I understand his desire to keep his first car but sometimes the risk of something going wrong or just the shear cost doesn't make it worth it in the long run. Be far easier and cheaper with less risk to just buy a new one and move his current bolt on mods over to it.

Also since you bought the AT in the first place. What is your reasoning for now wanting a MT? From a roll they are basically the same speed, the AT shifts faster, and more consistent, and can hold more power without needing to be built. Manual can launch and has closer/better gearing.

100% this. These aren't 1970's cars with no electronics, it's significantly harder to do the swap now.

Just buy another car. Keep that automatic as a daily. You’ll regret it when you wonder why you run out of fuel* quicker because of wonderful stop and go traffic. I was going to swap my sc300 to manual until I realized the cost involved. I sold it. Maybe one day I can get a soarer.

Yeah I understand it’s pretty involved and a huge pain in the butt I bet but I know it’s possible. Seen a couple people do it on forums social and media and YouTube. When I bought the car when I was 18 and at the time I was buying the car I just saw the color I liked and went for it since they didn’t have it in Manual(big mistake but it is what it is). I want to swap manual because it’s a lot more fun especially on the FRS I hear and it’s also drift friendly compared to an AT. I found a group that sells kits for a swap and they priced their kit at $1700 shipped. I really wanna do it myself but I might take it to a shop it just all depends. I’m not too worried about the cost as much I’m more worried about shit going wrong lol. How much do you guys think the total cost would be getting the parts and having a shop install it with a new tune put on it? Just curious. Also thank you for the link of that manual swap btw.

I'd bet that parts and labour if paying a shop to do it would be at least $5000, more if having to buy all the parts new vs finding good used ones.


If you've never done something comparable to this, I'd make sure you have friends or local people on standby to help when things go wrong. You'll have a significant portion of the car apart to do this, and without good mechanical experience (or helpers that know what they're doing), you'll end up with a pile of parts being towed to a shop to finish what you started. At that point it'll cost even more because they have to triage what you did, where everything is, and what needs to go back.


How long can you go without the car running? Doing the conversion yourself will take multiple days easily.



Unless you're building a full out race car and are gutting all the original stuff anyway, it's always cheaper and easier to just sell the automatic and buy a manual one instead with modern cars.

Like all and any form of entertainment, they have far more $ and resources than they let on. Just as Rambo can jump off any waterfall and his weapons never rust/he never dies, the people you see on YouTube and social media have a lot up their sleeve that they aren't discussing.

Things you will need:

-Tools
-Lifts
-Tranny jack
-Gear oil
-Manual Transmission
-MT mounts
-MT driveshaft
-Clutch kit
-MT flywheel
-Clutch slave cylinder
-Clutch slave line
-Clutch slave reservoir
-Clutch fluid
-MT brake pedal assembly
-Clutch pedal assembly
-Clutch pedal kill switch
-Bolts could be the same and I’m assuming the starter is the same

I could imagine there being a check engine light, so you might need a manual transmission car’s engine harness and ECU or figure out some way to fool the auto ECU. Usually such a problem would put the auto transmission into a limp mode, but not the engine, hopefully, so it might just be a daily annoyance.

I think you can get away with just reflashing the ECU, but that still requires a tactrix cable at minimum and then hunting down the appropriate tune.

You forgot the shift linkage and boot and knob, those are usually sold separately from the transmission iirc
