Some years there was a BRZ or two in the race but this year none. Randy Pobst liked the neutral handling of the BRZ better so Ive always wondered why it doesnt do better in races--maybe the GT86 with sticky tires actually is faster, or maybe its just more popular...

Most GT86s are running in category SP 3. There is also one running alone (without opponents) in category V 3. In fact there is no car officially supported by Toyota Japan. The GT86s that are racing are actually CS-CUP cars prepared and maintained by Toyota Motorsport GmbH and run by local teams. The Germans designed especially for this race a larger (double quantity) fuel tank that helps to minimize the pit stops and give an advantage over other cars. Instead of a standard built-in tank in the rear, TMG engineers integrated the new tank on the underfloor, following the same location as the road car. The centre of gravity is still low, and the lap times will increase only marginally despite the additional weight. Subaru was never interested to bring a BRZ in these races, because they promote their own car the WRX STI. However, it is sad that Toyota has not sent their own team. They've done it in the past. This year they sent only one team with a Lexus RC car. Maybe they've lost their interest on GT86 already ... |

There is a preference on the Toyota's, because TMG sponsors a local championship with GT86's. There is not something similar for the BRZ's. Additionally, the TMG cars had this year a few changes in the engine. Official output is now 212hp. In Europe we didn't get the recent power increases, so these cars are much stronger than the stock BRZ's. They are also properly prepared for racing with very low weight (1100 kg) and a suitable roll cage. |

Yes one car is in P1, but I was expecting to be faster. Additionally, the overall rank is low. The Renault Clio's are holding well in the class and in fact they are an older architecture (Renault Clio 3). Check here the difference with the newer architecture:

Unfortunately, we lost P1 and we are very back to recover. Additionally we didn't take advantage of the fewer pit stops, because there were some small accidents and we lost time. Something is wrong with the TMG's CS-CUP cars. It doesn't make sense to be slower than the Clio 3's. The Clio's have same engine displacement and output, similar weight and higher center of gravity. Maybe the Bilstein springs are too stiff for our cars and we lose mechanical grip.

So we finished 3rd in SP3 behind the Clios, way back in position 93 out of 160. The GT86 in V3 actually beat the top GT86 in SP3 by one position, which is odd since I think V3 allows less modifications. Does seem something was not right with the SP3 cars. In SP3T the Gazoo Lexus RC split the Audi TTs in 2nd place, position 26.

I checked in more detail and one of the SP3 cars was hit by another GT4 car. They lost some time to get back to the pits and later they had a driveshaft failure. Maybe as a side effect of the initial collision. This is the one that managed to finish, I am not aware why the other two stopped the race earlier. Anyway, I still believe that something was not right with the SP3 cars. |
