Ya, I oversimplified. It isn't just the syncros it is the whole make up of trannys with syncros that usually make them quieter. Newer oils, gear cut, better bearing, etc all come into play. There are exceptions of course.

I'm starting to feel it chatter at low speeds when I'm being dumb and trying to lay down the powah

Yeah but my brand new transmission I put in there still makes the whine, maybe not as much though.

My old 81 El Camino made an awful lot of racket.

But that car had a very leaky transmission and power steering reservoir, disintegrating exhaust system, a slipping belt, and was basically being held together by very thick coat of bright yellow paint my uncle threw all over it.

AHHHHH the sound of a power steering pump that is low on fluid. There was zero doubt as to what was wrong.
The nostalgia brings a tear to my eye.

If the pitch continues to climb with vehicle speed, it's either the diff or the trans output shaft. If it follows engine speed and drops with each shift, it's the input shaft. Mine was the input shaft.

Mine was with outa doubt the diff. I went with a bit heavier oil and it was good for about a month but then went right back to it's Bjork imitation.

Just put enough aftermarket parts on and change your gearbox fluid. My car makes all kind of lovely ticks, whines and pops that were covered up by the engineering of the oem parts.

Bonus points if you get some stout brake pads and slotted rotors- you get that race car brake squeal when coming to a dead stop on any day below 60 degrees.
