I see alot of talk about blowby, not just the twins, but alot of manufacturers, I put some of this down to poor ring to bore seal, I put that down to not loading the engine up "hard" within the first real heat cycle.

Point of note is I have never had blowby issues in any engine I have broken in hard.

My EJ STI for instance (a classic example for blowby), running 22psi, thrashing the life out it day on day out, never had a issue, others, who have "broken it in by the manual" end up with oily intakes and catch cans full of oil.

Meh

I have never had any issues with blow by with an engine broken in per instructions. We cancel each other out in the sample size of two so it is a draw.

Thanks to all for their opinions. This is just the way I drive. Resale and increasing its longevity is never a thought.

I anticipate stops and slow down before using my brakes. I set the rpm alarm at 3000 and have only had it go off maybe 3 times so far. I do not plan on keeping it for a very long time and may trade or sell it if there is a major model change. So...maybe in a few years if plan to do sell or trade remember me. This is the car to buy. NEVER been beaten on and ready for someone who wants a BRZ that has basically been babied and well cared for.

They do all the important break in stuff at the factory. I read that in motorcycles they are starting to just realize this and driving them how they choose.

The theory behind the hard break in to me makes a lot of since. When I rebuilt my engine I broke it in hard. I decided to never wash my exhaust tips and see how long they go before getting dirty. I have about 12k on it since the rebuild and still haven’t cleaned the tips.

I don't think Cliff was stating that he drives easy for resale but was commenting that it would be a nice perk for someone looking for a car like that.

Just starting? This debate is not new by any stretch. It has been going on since the first cars rolled off the lines. Both methods have their good and bad points.

Of course it has. But 50 years ago technology and knowledge was totally different. I don't think anyone will ever take the time to do enough research to prove anything.

I'm not an expert about this; however I think the building process of an internal combustion engine has not changed a lot in 50 years.

Nope but manufacturing processes and tolerances have. The theory behind the easy break in was that you need to baby it while the imperfections in the manufacturing process wear down. The theory behind the hard break in is that you want to build enough cylinder pressure to push the rings against the cross hatching on the cylinder walls before they wear away. The cross hatch pattern is there to basically grind the rings into the shape of the cylinder walls. The hard break in technique prescribes that you load it up hard within the first 25 miles but not rev it past 75% of the rev band. If you read BMW and Porsche’s break in suggestions they basically prescribe the hard break in.

I personally believe stronger in the hard break in but I see good points on both sides.
