2019 86Cup Presented By GT Radial

New year, new 86Cup season!

Winter has come and gone, drivers are ready to run. Excitement filled the garages as the first race of the season went underway, ready to shake off the rust and set some times. The weather was perfect and could not have asked for more. The weather gods making up for last years horrible weather.

A record 29 participants raced including a group of our friends from our NorCal group 86Drive Challenge. It was a very interesting lineup of cars and drivers with Stock/Street class having the GT Radial monopoly and Mod/Unlimited showing a huge variety of tire compounds.

Drivers are out for blood this year. Session 2 saw the previous Stock Class record of 2:06.6 beaten by 3 drivers with Fast Frank putting the hammer down to set a new GT Radial Stock Class record of 2:06.037! *applause* SonnyMod also setting a new Mod class record on a car that is barely optimized for the class (4.35pts) with a blazing fast 1:58.901 *applause again* Not to be overshadowed by smashed records, multiple PB's were also set by majority of the drivers. I retract my statement that drivers were rusty from the winter break!

This race was also a comeback story for some drivers. We welcome back Filip Craciun who took a small sabbatical and returns with the White Beast. Scott Malloy also, as he has fixed his car from that Laguna shunt. Tony Bombino also finally showing up this time!
It was an awesome start to the season and we hope to keep the momentum going as we head to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway on Feb 9 for Round 2 (http://speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=745). Thank you very much for your support in our quest for driver development and improvement. Hope to see you all soon!!

Awesome turn out

I really want to do this in the Northeast, but I don't want to pay $45 every time for transponder rental. Can I just buy my own transponder? If so where do I get one that is the correct one to use?

I would talk to the NE 86Cup group and who they run with. Make sure the transponder works on their system.

Also in Norcal we can use Harry's Lap Timer (external GPS makes it pretty accurate) or something like an AIM Solo. Both incur minor time penalties or less the 1 second but may be an option. I don't know the rules they use or how open they are to options like that.

Glad to see all everyone who showed up. Great weather and community. You can definitely see people are not focused on loading up their cars with gear to pay for better lap times, but rather push attention towards driving with a level playing field and learning the art of driving as a more in-depth study. The sheer skill level as an average is higher and better because each individual contributes to the cause of bettering the community. Congrats to all the winners. Look forward to supporting ya'll with the damper tuning and driving tips again.

Buttonwillow 86Cup R3 Results

It was another record setting day at Buttonwillow for 86Cup Round 3. Over 40 cars from both SoCal 86Cup and NorCal 86Drive Challenge came to race and try to beat their PB's at the iconic Buttonwillow Race 13 CW.

What a day. We all thought the Stock Class record of 2:06.03 set by Frank Alfaro at 2019 R1 would stand for a long time. Jokes on us, two rounds later Jeremy Yeung used his right foot in place of a diff to do an astonishing 2:05.838 (WTF?!). We are anxiously awaiting the video to see what he did diff...erent in the magic lap. Frank is still on pace with a 2:06.5 and Mikko has lost his will to live driving a painfully slow 2:07.474, rounding up the Stock Class podium. P3 and P4 we have Norcal drivers Tor Anderson and Ben Luu, consistently getting faster and whittling away at their times. 86Cup Mom has been spotted at the track keeping the kids in line while David Leung installed too many sandbags on his car and did a 5:15.502 lap (sub 6!) Impressive!

GT Radial Street Class has been a battle between Chaz Head and Hiro Sumida these past few rounds. Chaz takes it this time, proving once again how capable automatic transmissions are on track. Hiro has been experimenting with his car setup and will definitely be back for the chase next time. Matt Belter shows a lot of improvement doing a sub 2:10 with only his 3rd time at Buttonwillow. Speaking of improvements, our lady drivers Jackie Bacal Head and Paula Yi are neck and neck as they continue to get faster every race! Being a gentleman, Scott Irwin let the ladies go first this round.

Modified Class sees #SonnyMod take the win again with a super fast 1:59.998, talk about sub-2:00! Kevin Schweigert was fighting some gremlins on his car that day but still finished with 2 minutes flat on Michelin PS4S tires. Trailing right behind Kevin is Mr. SpeedSF himself, Joe McGuigan, doing a cool 2:01.438, while sipping his chocolate shake.

Finishing up the podiums, Unlimited Class has Filip Craciun taking the top spot with a 2:01.963, followed closely by Neil Wiebner with a 2:02.203. Dwane Truong has seen steady improvement, blazing just behind, rounding up the Unlimited Class podium with a solid 2:04.458. Jainish Mistry flexes his supercharger for a 2:05, and Mike Kang giving our sponsors a shout out with a 2:52.949.

Crossover days are so much fun, and always seems to inspire drivers to push that tiny bit more. We love having these joint events with our NorCal brethren and are excited that we have more upcoming! Rest up and do your homework because the battle continues at Streets of Willow *CCW* on May 11th!

Round 7: Streets of Willow CW Results

The 86Cup circus goes to Streets of Willow after a two month summer break. A record attendance of 37 drivers for a non-joint event either shows how much the series has grown and that everyone has been deprived of trackdays, itching to get their racing fix.

It was good to see both regulars and newcomers to the series. Before we head to the class results, join me in welcoming the 86cup freshmen! William Chen Gerald Tiamson Tony Ear Christian Rey Blanco Adam Johnston Yoshioka Alex and Aleks Paragas. Make no mistake, they are out for blood and are very fast!

We start with the new Supra Class as Jerel Natividad... oh wait..

The extremely friendly and non-competitive GT Radial Stock Class just got shook this round. For the first time, a new driver other than Jeremy or Frank won a round. William Chen kept his foot down and took the class win and a new record for the track with a 1:29.352! Frank Alfaro, needing to sustain a good result delivered with a 1:31.279 with Mikko trailing behind by half a second. Both drivers have been in the podium of all the races they attended since mid-2017 season! Jeremy Yeung, for the first time struggled, 1:32.162 but still has a comfortable buffer of wins. They will continue the championship battle at the Roval.

Luke Daley has shown continuous improvement and posted a very quick 1:33.077 despite having coilpack issues. While Ben Luu was seen practicing for 86DriftCup hence his 6th place finish. Newcomers and comeback drivers David Gunn @Gerald, Moises MJ, Adam Johnston, Tony and Yuting Guan round up the very successful GT Radial Stock Class.

GT Radial Street class shows veteran Isamu Kakitani putting his gurney flap to good use and getting used to the SX2 with a 1:30.497 with Chaz Head extending his championship lead with a 1:31.156. Pasi Cunanan, shaking down his TRD 86 takes 3rd place, hopefully his wish will be granted and gets that win! Keep writing at the comments section of the form! Street Class is also very competitive with a string of 1:32 drivers headed by Prajekt Barnes, Ronnie Erwin, Wesley Chan and Scott Irwin! Hopefully a new rivalry comes out of this group!

GT Radial Stock and Street Class continue to have an overwhelming majority use of the fantastic GT Radial SX2. 23 of the 26 drivers are using the tried and true 'spec' tire. Please continue to spread the good news that is the SX2.

Modified Class is headed by the King of the North Kevin Schweigert with a 1:26.564 and fastest time of the day. His secret lightening upgrade of gorilla tape holding his car together worked wonders. I'm very glad that he was able to finish the day with no issues *knocks on wood*. Coach Joe McGuigan continues his search for the best fast tire with a 1:27.035. Keith Wong takes his first 86Cup podium with a 1:29.557 followed by Jaime Salafranca and newcomer Aleks Paragas. Toshi Nakamae has shown great improvements as they day progressed and breaking into the sub 1:40 despite heavy run group traffic.

Oren Holzman takes his first 86Cup Unlimited Class win with a 1:27.208. Congratulations and well deserved! Comeback star Tony Bombino shaking down his sweeeeet freshly upgraded car with a 1:28.771. Ayayron Gong was having too much fun as he practices for SuperLapBattle, taking third place. Jainish Mistry takes out his Mazda CX-5 to do a 1:37.595 with Mike Kang struggling and just barely broke into the high 1:40s, what a slow guy.

As always, it was a pleasure driving with all of you. It is rewarding to see everyone improve their driver mod and showing results instead of keyboard racing in facebook. I hope to see everyone on October 6 as we head to AutoClub Speedway Roval with our SUNDAY event.
