2017 NorCal 86CUP - Presented by GT Radial
We've been posting in the 2016 thread, but it's time to split from that and create a new one. So what is 86CUP?
86CUP is the premier, independently organized, FRS/BRZ Time Trial series in North America. Utilizing a ruleset that is specific to the platforms, the 86CUP aims to provide a friendly, safe, environment in which 86 enthusiasts can hone their driving skills. Come join us at our events, get a ride, and experience the true capabilities of our platform in its natural environment! For 2017, we'd like to welcome GT Radial as the title sponsor for the NorCal 86CUP! GT Radial has been a sponsor for us since the beginning, but this year, they're upping the ante and generously giving away cash prizes for the podium winners of the Stock and Street classes in addition to the tire Contingency program. See below for details! Returning this year to continue supporting our series are Winmax, CounterSpace Garage, Elite Performance, and 86drive. Each have been instrumental in the past to help build the NorCal 86CUP series to what it is today, and we look forward to working with these sponsors again this year! We have a website with all the details about the series here (http://www.norcal86cup.com/), but I'll summarize some of the highlights in this post. GT Radial Championship Prizes & Contingency Program Details: https://www.86cup.us/gtradial/ Schedule for 2017: Rules, Classes & Mod points: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#rules See you guys at the track! And here we are right after the first event!
What a wet start to the season of the 2017 NorCal 86CUP, presented by GT Radial! Thanks to everyone who came out to join us, and of course, thanks to all our sponsors for making this happen. I saw many familiar faces and some new ones too! We also had a good start to the GT Radial Championship Prize program with 6 drivers overall in the GT Radial Street Class! Looks like we're going to see some healthy competition in this class this year! Please see below for the results of this event, and visit the website for complete details: http://www.norcal86cup.com/ I already see some pictures and videos from Saturday popping up. If anyone else has pics/videos they'd like to share, post them up! Also, as a reminder, if you'd like to participate in the GT Radial Championship Prize program, you need to register with GT Radial directly by March 1! Please visit this page for instructions on how to register: https://www.86cup.us/gtradial/ I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the March 4-5 event at Thunderhill! The event is almost full, so register NOW. Open group still has spots, and Point-by has available spots on Sunday: http://www.ncracing.org/events.php #gtradial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #86Cup #NCRC Last edited by mkivsoopra; 03-07-2017 at 03:47 PM. |

Come out and join us! Its a ton of fun! As for costs... What is your experience level (how many track events if any)? The more experience you have the faster you will be and the more expensive it will be due to going through tires and brake pads faster. Tires: If you do the GT Radial Tire Contingency Program (ie install GT Radial SX2 or HPY on your rims and place the GT Radial fender or windshield sticker on your car) you can claim a free tire for every 10 pts you earn in your class. You can win a maximum of 10 pts per event. There are 13 events in 2017. Otherwise a set of tires will cost you $400-800 and it depends on how experienced you are regarding how often you will need to replace them. Entree Fee: Around $200 per event. You can learn more here: Website: http://norcal86cup.mkivsoopra.com/ Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/...up%20Challenge

If it's your first time at the track, you don't really need to do any of any of that yet, though brake fluid would be a good start. Just come join us at one of the next events! If you're still on the fence, you can come hang out (bring a helmet), and some of us can even give you a ride around the track. |

If you haven't done at least 7 track days, NCRC requires you to run in Solo - which means you can't sign up for the 86 Cup for their events (which require Open or Point-by). The Speed SF and Speed Ventures events are OK.
In addition to entry fees and tire wear, you might also need an oil cooler, brake pads, and brake fluid. Also don't forget a helmet and gloves. And a sense of adventure! |

This will be my first experience on the track. I've only done one other auto-x but that was a long time ago. I have a helmet, which I think should be alright (was purchased for a motorcycle).
My car is complete stock (under 3k, original Primacy tires) so I'm sure if I get a new set, it'll be an upgrade from what I have. |

@Kabong - I definitely recommend doing the driving school at an NCRC event. You'll get a lot more instruction time and attention than with Speed SF. Some other folks I know have recommended Hooked On Driving's events for a first track day as well.
Doing a track day with NCRC on an 86 Cup day will give you the added bonus of hanging out with other 86 drivers. Doing a ride-along with someone experienced is a great way to learn, too. Last weekend was my 3rd track day ever. The experience was a lot more fun with a group of 86 drivers. And even though I'm not running in the 86 Cup yet, @mkivsoopra and the rest of the 86 Cup crew graciously answered my questions about how everything works. I've had a bunch of different hobbies over the years, and this is a really welcoming, genuinely nice group of people. Last edited by TofuJoe; 02-23-2017 at 08:44 PM. |

Thanks for coming out to Round 2 and Round 3 of the NorCal 86 Cup, presented by GT Radial! We had some new drivers joining us, and a few more waiting to join! The relentless rain, bone-chilling cold, and wind made things more difficult, but didn't keep us from having fun!
Special thanks to our main sponsors, GT Radial, Winmax, Counterspace Garage, Elite Performance for making this happen. Please see below for the results from Round 2 and Round 3. On Saturday (Round 2), we ran Thunderhill in the Bypass configuration, and Sunday (Round 3) was Cyclone. Also note that Kevin has moved from Street class to Stock class, so his previous point total has changed to reflect the penalty. Full results can be seen at our website: http://www.norcal86cup.com/#standings We also have a new (simpler) domain for our website now: http://www.norcal86cup.com Please use this one going forward, but the old one is not going away anytime soon. The next events are on April 1 (no joke!) and April 2 with NCRC at Buttonwillow. The Point-by run group is already YELLOW for April 1, so sign up now!! http://www.ncracing.org/events.php #gtradial #winmax #counterspacegarage #eliteperformance #86drive #scottgrassophotography #86Cup #NCRC |

Thanks for gathering and posting the results. And cool that you updated the domain name. So rad that Kevin did a 2:11 in stock class. Nice to see Neal and Brandon battling it out, too!
