With a swap, a builder has the opportunity to succeed where the engineers at Toyota failed, by getting the engine and transmission set back far enough to get the weight distribution they promised us before the car was being sold.
Don't get too into the f/r weight distribution numbers. If they told the whole story, the Porsche 911 would be a terrible sports car.

In actual driving, weight transfers quite a bit. I'd have to think one f the reasons that the 911 is so good is that the rear tires actually do some braking where the rear goes very light under braking in a front-engined car.

In the case of the ram, the f/r split certainly doesn't tell the story that most of that weight is 3' or more off the surface of the road, negatively impacting just about every measure of sporty driving.

I see the appeal in swapping to a V8 powerplant. People do it in drifting with damn near every car. Why?

Broad powerband, instant torque, less clutch work needed etc etc. People use the swap in cars in all different types of motorsports.

I'm just a bit too much of a purist. If I had another S chassis, I'd stay SR20. If I did anything with the FRS/BRZ, it would be either boost the stock motor or swap to a 1JZ motor.

Only vehicle I would probably do a V8 swap with is an FC. I love the 13B Rotary but GAWD, so many people just seem to have bad luck with them after a while.

For 20 grand couldn't the current engine be forged to be able to handle 380-400 hp without loosing handling and retaining reliability?

So true with this LS2 swap

STi representative: "there's no space to fit an intercooler and turbo package"

Should I just go out and buy a used Corvette? It is cheaper and less headache.

Probably not reliability, but it depends how long you need the car to last. It may last tens of thousands of miles, but it probably won't be capable of the expected 200+k miles of a stock Subaru motor.

Personally, I would rather keep the boxer layout. 2015 STI motor swap. should have no problem with 400 hp and reliability. Can't imagine it would be any harder to fit than a LSx.

But the point of the LSx swap would be to hit much higher number than 400hp. 1000hp BRZ possibility.

That is a good idea. I read that the WRX and STi will have this motor. The Legacy in Japan has 295hp and 295 torque, you probably already know.

Probably, but that's not the point. An FR-S with a turbo and an FR-S with an LS would be two totally different cars. There's something to be said for a naturally aspirated motor, which i strongly prefer over something with a turbo.

With FA20s making more power on boost than is really useable on the street, what's the point? Beyond impressing people in the parking lot, you're pretty much left with a car that handles worse, sounds (and revs) like a pickup truck and gauged that don't work.

Maybe I just don't get it, but there's just no real good reason to swap out a perfectly good, modern, fairly amazing engine (FA20) for a 50 year old truck engine. Yes yes I know, it's the aluminum corvette version, but have you ever driven a corvette? They're awful cars, in large part due lazy-feeling pushrod dinosaur under the hood . That's just now what these cars are all about...
