The first time my current Newfie encountered a pool, she did the same thing. We were at a neighbor's house, their lab and our dog were chasing each other. The lab ran around the pool and my dog thought "ha! got you now" and took the direct line route which unfortunately for her went directly over the deep end of the pool. Poor thing was running at full speed and sank directly to the bottom. Fortunately Newfies are water dogs so she just swam up, jumped out and continued playing.

it was definitely a Wylie Coyote moment though. She just hung in the air for a second then dropped straight to the bottom!
