ARP Wheel studs + Muteki Lugs

So the story starts two years ago when I got my Apex ARC8s and decided I needed new lug nuts. Bought some Muteki blueish-purple ones and installed them. I was worried about how little stud they grabbed so, like any rational person, had an excuse for a new car part.

I bought the ARP extended wheels studs, did some research on the install, and then bought a ball joint separator from Amazon. After a buddy and I had tried and failed for about 5 hours to get the studs and lugs on the car, I was pissed. Finished a wheel, but one of the lugs would not fit and chewed up the stud in the process.

Last summer was rough for me and I didn't get a chance to try again until now. What I had thought was the studs, turned out to be the lug nuts. Most went on fine, but some were not quite right. Bought a 12x1.25 tap today and mended four of the lugs, two of which had been screwed up initially, the other two I think were just poorly made. Still, one of the studs was (is?) still in bad shape.

Took a file to the 1/4" of thread that was messed up, and then a triangle jewlers file to the remaining threads near the filing. Everything fits now and I can confirm that if they don't fit later, it's my fault.

Hoping to put these on tomorrow. Instead of a bearing puller, wheel hubs be damned, I'm going to hammer these out and use the Lisle stud installer tool. Wish me luck.[IMG]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190408/10c5942eda822***b658afa2cf742325.jpg[/IMG]

That's really odd. I've used 3 sets of SR48s now and have never had a problem threading them on ARP studs. Heck, I even impact them on if I'm in a hurry. Hand threading is for suckers.

Bad Studs

There was a run of studs that was known to be bad.

Did you use the lugs to pull the studs through the hub?

Well....

I super underestimated how hard getting the rear hubs off would be. Glad I bought a bearing puller this morning.

Fronts were super easy, not posting pics yet because the amount of brake dust on my wheels is embarassing.

Work will continue tomorrow.

Not initially. Used a ball joint separator to press them in (not bearing puller like I said originally). Today I used the wheel stud install tool pictured here. It worked very well and is well worth the money.

I ran into a similar issue when I used 1 lug to install multiple studs, I think around the 4th or 5th it started to deform and get out of shape. After I noticed this I used one lug to install two studs and then swapped out lugs.

I don't think what you're describing is an issue with either product, but rather a byproduct of backyard mechanic-ing your way around not having the right tools and over-stressing the lugs as they were not designed to take the force needed to seat the stud.

I had this happen to a customer and arp blamed the lug nuts. Both arp and muteki sent replacements, but then later I started hearing about some sort of a problem with arp's thread forming on some studs.

I'm leaning toward the lugs nuts having been fine all along.


If you are pulling the studs through, go to the hardware store and get some plain m12x1.25 nuts and a few washers instead of using your lug nuts with tapered seats.

I normally wouldn't doubt that I somehow screwed it up, but I pressed the studs in the first time. The lug nuts didn't touch them until after I tried to thread them on an already installed stud.*

*Which was a mistake, should have checked them first.

Torquing the Mutekis down to 89 ft-lbs created a lot of new metal on the lugs. Lugs were already installed. Maybe it's me, maybe I got a bad set, but I'll still order different lug nuts next time.

Seems like most here are using sr48's, do they really rust up good in the rain? Do you all use them on sunny day only rides? I really want opens on my dd for looks, but really dont want to pay for the kics "open style" closed lugs

As for the thread engagement - if you're engaging more than 1 diameter of the threads you should be just fine and unless you're running large spacers you're probably still engaging 1.5x diameter or better. Sorry about your situation with the ARP studs, that sucks. It seems like it would be easier to take the hub fully out to press out/in stud though. The whole hub/bearing carriage is only held in by 4 bolts.

I installed ARP extended studs and use a 15mm spacer and I'm still engaging 1.5x + diameter.
