Thanks! Wouldn't do it myself, but I've been waiting for a DIY on how to take the airbag off so I can do my GT-86 airbag swap. Yeah, I spent $800+ for it, big whoop, wanna fight about it? lol

Same here!

I saw the title -> clicked -> saw the pics and started to scroll down with a bit of excitement thinking I would see the first 86 steering wheel swap and then 0_o.

Please post up pics once you're done. Just the airbag was $800?! I thought it was for the entire steering wheel?!

Negative bro! It's just for the airbag (I know). Check the threads by Carson Toyota and Nigel, both have them for around $850. The steering wheel is extra. Still waiting for it to come in, will post pics when installed!

I'll buy the 86 airbag once I can buy it from a legit parts website.

Excellent writeup!

Maybe some goo-gone or any other petroleum product may get that gunk off under the emblem with a bit more finesse? I was thinking of working a leather saddle soap into it to get it thoroughly clean. Still can't tell if its leather. Hahaha!

Looking forward to seeing some more picture updates from others~

I remember seeing the thread with CT being able to get the JDM steering wheel cover. It is what it is and when I pick up mine, I would like to swap out out the Scion cover for an 86 too or go aftermarket. Hopefully the cost will come down once parts and car stabilize.

yeah.... not a fan. look's unfinished and tacky. would have been better to find something that actually fits in the spot. it's handy to know how the airbag comes out though.

Is it possible to remove the airbag completely from that cover and then reinstall?

I reccomend using tools like this to remove emblems. They are great to work on paint and interior panels so you don't scratch anything. At $7 you can't go wrong, if you cut on of their coupons out of a magazine it's even cheaper:
