Difficult to purchase one this year?

Similar to the thread created about the FRS, but regarding about this "limited availability" car, how hard would it be to purchase one?

I know allocations are listed in the stickies, but recall talking to a dealer mentioning to check back around Thanksgiving for more availability.

Are the second allocations (Dec-April) dependant on how well the BRZ sells initially?

The cars in that time frame would likely be the MY '14. Not a second allocation of MY '13

It may depend on geography. The dealer I ordered through is said to be getting a total of 7 2013 models in. As of today, only 3 of those pre-orders have buyers attached to them. However, I'm in the mid-west. In LA, I bet demand is much higher.

You have to be diligent, but there has to be someone out there pulling their pre-order. A few people have gotten lucky and walked into the right dealer at the right time. You never know!

Try checking to see if there is any dealers around you with high allocations. Chances are not all of them are filled and you could get one soon. Also, you might try checking some other dealers that aren't as close, if it would get you the car sooner.

True, but don't get your hopes up. Dealers who still have spots left are usually ones that have mark-up ($2k and up).

Manchester Subaru in NH is getting allocated 49 for the ~7month span, but the sales person I talked to said only 6 or so were sold.

If you want a BRZ you will be able to get one. They are not as rare as your might think. Go for the dealers up north for the best deals.

TripJammer is right! In my area a few dealers were playing the rare card. I made some calls and numerous slots were still available within 150 miles of me. I wouldn't be terribly suprised if all pre-orders were filled by July. I think a number of folks will get cold feet and free up rolling stock also. Just establish yourself as a serious buyer by walking into the dealerships shake hands with the sales manager and introduce yourself. Do it when lots of other staff are standing around and tell him you've heard good things about him and HIS staff, leave a card or number then follow up...

There's a bunch of dealers in the greater LA area. Very likely to have pre-ordered units that people have cancelled. Plan for the first month or so to be the most expensive, with potential dealer markups if you didn't pre-order, but after that you should be able to find one for sale. Might take a little time if you want a particular trim/color/trans.

I thought it was weird that I'm in a very small city and I got a call to go test drive one on Friday. I'm in Grants Pass Oregon and the dealer in Medford about 30 minutes away. He also said that those are the only two they are getting until next year. I just cant pull the trigger knowing that there's a possibility of an STI model within a year or two.

They are also trying to get a $500 non-refundable deposit.

There are lots of people backing out of their pre-orders for one reason or another, I think the next month or two will be very easy to pick one up.

Seems to me (at least on this forum) there are a good number of folks with multiple preorders. That's going to lead to that kind of thing.
