FRS and IS are too different to even bring in the same topic. Just finacially, I would pick FRS, because it is cheaper.

I would personally say that if your budget is 43k, you go for the RS 1.0 FRS and put the remaining funds into mods for the car. In the end, I feel the frs has more overall potential.. If you're planning on keeping it stock though I'd go for the IS.

Ok. I own a 2013 FR-S. It's really fun. But, it's just too noisy. And not good kinda noisy. Simply, it's unrefined. In fact, two years later, I've had enough. I have been test driving BMWs (228) and Audi (A4 and A3). I was about to go with the 228i with m sport suspension, etc. Before signing the papers, I thought I should drive an IS. I knew I wouldn't like the 250 but didn't think the 350 was in my price range. And wasn't sure it would be sporty enough. But, wow I drove an IS 350 F sport and it was really fun AND refined! And they are making deals on it that make it way more affordable to lease than a BMW. Currently, I own outright my FR-S (paid all cash). This time I'm going to "test drive" it for a couple years (i.e.: lease it) and if I truly fall in love, I'll buy it when the lease is up. If not, I'll move on to something else. This is what I should have done with the FR-S; I wouldn't have bought it when the lease was up.

Or be financially responsible now so you can drive fun cars for the rest of your life, your choice...

Life is short. I wouldn't fret about 10K in student loans like other folks around here are suggesting.
You have your whole life ahead of you to pay that down. Gotta have fun and sometimes treat yourself to the nicer things in life.. You can't take it with you.. If I prioritized personal finances over everything else, I would never go on a date.. Go out to cool restaurants.. Or take fun trips. I would miss out on all the fun things in life and become incredibly boring. |

So let's say you buy the Lexus tomorrow and your income allows you to just barely make payments for both the car and the student loans. You take out a 6 year loan on the lexus and let's assume you have 10 years left on your student loans. Let's say you're paying 6% on all of your loans for argument sake. With this model, you are going to pay $8,381 of interest by the time both loans are paid off. Now let's say you take my advice and pay off your student loans first by putting the money you would be spending on the Lexus towards your student loans. Then, once those are paid off next November, you buy the Lexus and again borrow $40k. We'll assume interest on both is again 6%, even though it would likely be lower for the Lexus now that you're debt free. So now that you have the Lexus, you put the money you were spending on student loans towards the Lexus. When the car is paid off, you will have spent $5,262 on interest and both loans will be paid off completely over a year earlier. By being patient, you have just saved yourself $3,118 in interest alone. If you're willing to put a bit more towards paying off your debts (I paid $1500 a month towards my student loans, for example), these numbers skew in favor of waiting on the car even more heavily. Also, during the time you drive your current car (assuming you wait to buy something), you will save money on gas (most likely), insurance, tax, and maintenance (most likely), and depreciation that you could put towards paying off your student loans, which should also be factored in. These things will save you even more money in the long run. You're probably sitting there justifying all of this interest payment in your mind. Don't. Take $20 out of your pocket and light it on fire. Watch it until it's completely gone. Think about all of the things you could have just spent that $20 on that you now can't. This is exactly what paying interest is. Think before you spend money you haven't earned. You'll find you have a lot more money than you think.
