Not so fast everybody. He lives in Texas. Texas is the only state that uses at total loss ratio of 100%. By statute, the cost of the repairs have to total up to 100% of the car's cash value before it is required by statute to be totaled. If the car was worth $20K and the repairs totaled $19,500, the insurance company could still opt to repair the car and give it back to him without a salvage title.

They can total it at a lower amount, but they don't have to. I'm not sure what they do in actual practice.

Yeah, if they don't total it you'll be driving a sidewinder for sure. That's major structural damage.

Trunk is not structural damage and easily replaced.

You always have the right to get your own estimate.

Still not structural? Axle isn't part of the cars structure...

I see trunk, trunk floor, tail light, bumper, crash bar, axle, and rear quarter. None of which is structure damage. Oh and air bag since you said it went. Fyi, curtain air bags are just under 1k, airbag and module together. Bumper, cover, trunk floor is around 1600 total. No idea on tail light, axle, and trunk.

And yes, those prices are from experience and acquired from toyota.

There easily could be just alot of suspension parts that have broke or bent, which are not that hard to replace.

I would try for another estimate though.

It's a unit body - the rear quarter is part of the structure of the car. To repair it correctly, they will have to cut it out and weld in a whole new rear quarter. I'm also not convinced there isn't further frame damage under all that; the fact that the trunk floor has been crumpled (which is inside the frame) from a hit to the outside quarter means the energy transferred in from somewhere.

Any inspection will easily show that chunk has been replaced and most any dealer will consider it frame damage.

The trunk pan is a crumple zone and will crumple even in a low speed rear ending. I can look at my invoice and tell you how much everything he needs costs at dealer pricing with oem parts. And his estimate is about right.

Keep in mind, it seems like this is also his FIRST estimate, which means he still has the 2nd estimate after the car is torn down. But, I also just had 3/4ths of the car fixed and my total was 9000.

IMHO it looks completely repairable without totaling. Only the crumply bits crumpled as they should which protected the frame (From what I can see and infer from the 1st estimate). Even though it's a unibody car it still has what's considered a frame which is the integrated structural foundation of a unibody chassis.

I've bent lots of wheels/axles/control arms on various cars without ever hurting a pickup point in the one case I did it was easily remedied by a body shop.

If the body shop you go to is high caliber, you should be good as new and not be able to tell anything happened.
