Who Uses Oil Scavenging Pump for Turbo Drain
I'm on the final steps of installing my turbo kit, and just realized that there's no way in hell I can properly drain the oil back into the pan. Does anyone use a scavenging pump to force feed the pan and keep the oil from back up?
Not talking about the AVO kit. |

IIRC the WRX uses a scavenge oil pump. Why try to reinvent the wheel when you can use and OEM designed off the shelf part? Just grab one from a Subaru dealer.

It does use one, but doesn't it bolt on to the turbo itself? I'll look into it. I had convinced myself I needed an inline pump

I used the wrx scavenge pump to pump oil through the oil cooler. The internal return is jb welded and the new 6an is welded on the cover for oil cooler feed. You have to use an adaptor plate for our NA engines.
I could machine the adaptor plate but you would need to drill the three holes for the pump body, the red ones in picture and counter sink them on the back side, also you would have to set the depth of the drive. I used a three jaw puller and a c clamp to move back and forth. I also used a hammer to hit the top of puller and c clamp when it gets too much for them to move. This moves the gear on the shaft to set how far the drive sits in the cam. The plate has a lip to center the pump in the cylinder head that may need a light sanding to pull up tight and center the pump. I guess I could machine all the holes but I don't have a loose pump to test fit. Last edited by solidsnake11; 05-19-2019 at 09:34 PM. |

I have also used a 12v holley gear fuel pump for the scavenge pump on a motorcycle. The turbo needs a sump chamber and mine needed to have a vent or the turbo would stop turning at an idle when the pump was on.

Seems like a ton of work! Pretty cool though! I ended up buying a TurboWerx pump today, I'll see what headaches that introduces. At least my oil drain won't be one of them.

If your going to use it as a scavenge pump only, it doesn't need to be modified for the return

I found the TurboWerx is overpriced and poor quality. Failed after about three months and left me stranded on the highway (blowing huge plumes of smoke as the oil leaked past the seal into the exhaust).
Switched to a Marco pump and been very happy with it. (The Coyoda kit supplies Marco but when I bought my they couldn't source the Marco one so supplied TurboWerx one. They swapped it out when it failed.)

On our PTUNING turbo kit we use a mechanical scavenge pump

Just keep a few spare fuses in your car. Might get you home in pinch.
