'83 Honda Civic S I had was a ton of fun out on gravel Forrest Service roads.

Hope BC down to the north end of Ross Lake. 40 miles of gravel both ways. Woot!

Montesano to Lake Wynoochee was all gravel back then too. They've paved it now though. Spoilsports.

The only Civic I have ever drove was one of the original cars to be called "rice". It was not fast nor fun.

I never said "sporty." I said sports car. Lol...You know what man, you win. I concede. Hondas are great "sports cars!" Repeat that mantra as you're driving one and maybe it'll be true. 👍

That is quite true, the term "rice burner" was commonly used for any cheap Japanese car in that era.

Those Civics were revolutionary when they came out, with the CVCC motor, but the body panels would rust if you looked at them sideways.

Never had an issue with body rust out here for the 11 years I had it.
When I traded it in, the body was good as new.
The muffler had the bottom drop out after about 8 years. Replaced that in the driveway.

The only thing that put me off was that the water pump froze up.
Being that it was driven by the cam belt, it borked the interference valves/pistons/head.

After a 2 week vacation to San Diego and back it broke about 5 miles from my house. :/
Got that fixed and drove it for another year or two.

lucky pacific northwest. Whatever the country did you guys never get the awful crap the rust belt and the northeast gets. early Japanese cars here would literally last until the sheet metal rusted out and all that was left was the engine and the running gear.

Not just Japanese cars but pretty much all of them right up to the late 80s. There was no such thing as rust resistant panels and much of the steel used was recycled WW2 ships and equipment that already had a high oxide level when it was melted back down. They were literally pulling ships off the ocean floor and melting them down for decades. Those cars were doomed even outside of the rustbelt. I chuckle when I see people here panic over a bit of surface rust on a paint chip when back then a 5 or 6 year old car could be missing most of the floor and have holes right up to the door handles.

The cars are made in Japan. They're ricers. Who cares what other people think.
