The problem with power (of any kind), is that you always want more.
Yes there is a dip, and I'd prefer it not to be there. But I'd also like to have 250hp, but if I had, after a couples of months, I'd want 300hp...
So it's not the end of the world.

After driving almost exclusively the BRZ for a while, when I drove recently an automatic Jetta and a Corolla for a couple of days, I was wondering how people can drive those cars.

With the Jetta I thought something was wrong with the car. But no that's its normal acceleration. Do people know that a base 2015 jetta has 115HP (I didn't know). The Jetta at redline basically had worst acceleration than the BRZ in the torque dip...

The torque peak at 3k rpm is awesome for DD, don't know what y'all are complaining about.

And coming from an NA Miata, you might need time to figure out what to do with all the power. And refinement.

I don't notice the dip so much as the swell of power coming on starting at 4-4.5k. Vt3c, y0!

Had a loaner Echo for like a month once. There will be a gap in traffic and people back off and let you merge. In the FRS, people go out of their way to block you in.

The only other car that I've had where people drive that way is my old STS CRX that was lime green/white/black with vinyl numbers/graphics and LOUD.

It's like having a small to medium turbo that needs a second to spool up.

So, basically, it's not an issue. You learn to drive around it in a hurry, and the second peak is, as noted above, very nice.

I've never had that happen to me. And my car is WRB with lime green wheels. Of course I have no problems daring someone to hit me too, learning to drive in Boston makes me totally and completely uncaring.

Learning to drive in the city (with a beater) is the best! I had a Ford 1800 pickup.

On trips I sometimes drive that way with my BRZ, sometimes. But now I live out in the sticks so everyone here is courteous and friendly.

For daily driving, this car is fantastic. It has a love for small town driving.

The torque dip is nowhere near as irritating as having to read about it. Not even close.

Then.. I discovered that I had only to read the first page of posts to see that Ultra beat me to it.

And yet.. post it anyway, I did, because against the inanity, fight I must.

where upstate ny are you?

i had a 91 na miata that was stock for 2 ish years and then I supercharged it, header, exhaust, eibach prokit and strt struts, wheels and s. drives, and a roll bar. Nothing crazy.

Stock vs stock the 86 is immensely quicker. Less body roll. chassis feels far more rigid.

Modded vs stock 86 I feel they were very comparable in terms of acceleration and handling. the miata might have had an edge acceleration wise but the 86 doesn't feel lacking to me.

I havent autocrossed the 86 yet so I can't speak on that.

the 86 is WAY more versatile of a car though. i actually was very surprised as to how many groceries i could fit in tje car with the seats down. i can also lug around 2 of my dogs no problem.

You've got to boil the hell out of the torque before you mash it up for the dip.
Kind of like Jamacan ackee. "... The unripe fruit can also cause severely low blood sugar levels, convulsions, and death."

Best served with salt cod.

So I bought a 2013 BRZ, rally blue with 40k. I really enjoy the cat. Have snows on it, bought my auto x wheels with Rivals on them. Have not driven the car in anger yet ,but I really am loving it. It’s like a Miata for grown ups. It’s quieter, has USB hookups (even though the head unit is pretty crappy). Heated seats. I’ll be selling the Miata this spring with no regrets. I autocross with SNYR and Glen region, but I have been know to go to some NEPA and CNY events as well. The dip is a little irritating but can be driven around. It will always be faster than a Miata.
