It makes no difference to me whether or not a convertible is offered. I waited YEARS for a car like this to be built. My first new car. The country is full of MX-5s, S2000s and MR2 Spiders that only get driven two days a week.

You know what I think when I look at the 86?
Man this car REALLY needs LESS room in the back seat and trunk. |

For purposes of comparison,
S2000 x-bone: FT86 safe-ring frame: That the open-top S2000 attained 22,000 Nm/degree was remarkable. The FT86 doesn't have a similarly tall chassis tunnel running down the middle, and its longer wheelbase would make open-top torsional rigidity that much more challenging. Even with a significant weight increase due to chassis reinforcements, it'd still be comparably noodly. I'm with Yoshinaga on this one.

No shock here. Subaru was already forced to pick between a sedan and hatch WRX because their engineering department is spread so thin they couldn't invest the resources to do both (per SOA Blog on NASIOC). This despite the hatches making up 50% of their US WRX sales. Have to think that making a convertible GT86 for Toyota is WAY further down the list of priorities.

Toyota and Subaru have had their disagreements before (rear wheel drive Toyota vs all wheel drive Subaru) which stopped production for so many months. Subaru had to be shown the nice things about rear wheel for this car from Toyota. Then Subaru agreed and went forward. The same thing will happen here. They should take the back seats out and make it a two seater. They can modify the frame structure and add a flat roll bar behind the seats for safety. It might add some weight but it can be done.

Shortening the wheelbase would help reduce weight in an open-top version, but by removing the rear seats, you'd essentially be left with a slightly portlier Miata. Why bother?

DANG, it seems like that in this day and age, everyone wants to get into everyone else's market....
My take is that if a person wants a good, relatively economical, 2-seat roadster, buy a Miata. If you want a good, relatively inexpensive, 2-seat (basically) coupe, buy a FR-S/BRZ... Manufacturers .... just focus on doing better, what you do best .... What ever happened to "niche" marketing ..... humfrz |
