Update:

I've been looking around for iPad mounts. At first, I was thinking of going with a moveable/retractable one, but then I realized that there is nothing on the market that looks good, is functionable and is not ridiculously priced. Not only that, but it will just be too much for a car... So I've decided to go with a regular mount. Preferably one that can be hidden when placing the stock top cover back on. It will take some minor modifications, but I'll probably go with something like this. It's affordable, simple and can be modified to fit a car.

If anyone have any suggestions, let me know.

Rumor has it that apple will be releasing a 7"screen iPad. Also speculation it will be ipad3.

Getting that to fit in dash should be easier. Want something I can remove from the car easily.

iPad 3 rumors are all about Retina Display-class touchscreen.

Side rumors are about Apple augmenting the iPad line with a smaller version with a 7.85" screen.

And, culled from an Apple rumors forum, this interesting tidbit:

Quote:
The 7" inch screen is for an infotainment system Apple is making for the VW Group. It will debut in the 2013 Audi A3. It will include Siri, Apple Maps and Directed Audio for private calls. Audi has been chomping at the bit for years to have a partnership with Apple. Another industry changer.
Now, something like the above, mounted in the dash from the factory, like a head unit (only different) would be cool!

I'm don't think the 8 inch iPad is happening, solely because Steve Jobs said it wasn't, because 9.7 is exactly the right size for a tablet.

And it goes completely against Apple's way to side with another company and provide systems solely for their product. IE making iPad setups for VDub.

But with Tim Cook in charge, maybe everything is changing, which is a very sad thought...

But, back to the point, Mac Mini carputer anyone?

I just got an otter box and cover for my iPad, I'm going to take a simple ram mount, and mount it to the box cover. Easy, cheap, and properly mounted.

I've tried a few mounting options for the original iPad in my car, but nothing seems to work and it just looks impractical. The FR-S/BRZ won't hold a 10" screen too well, so I'll probably just leave my iPad on the passenger seat when I need it for music. With a 5.8 day music playback battery, I will definitely continue to use it in the FR-S/BRZ for audio purposes.

One very important thing to keep in mind, Steve Jobs (Rest In Peace, Oh Crazy One!) also told us at one time that Apple would NEVER make a cell phone…!

As for the Audi connection, if an actuality, less of an iPad & more of a built-in bespoke-esque navigation/entertainment/digital assistant system…

And toward Tim Cook as the new CEO, I am a HUGE Apple fan, and was greatly saddened when I heard of Steve Jobs passing; but hold out hope that things will stay on the positive side for a number of years to come. Apparently, Steve knew he was not long for this world, and has laid out plans for the next three or more years of how & what Apple should do in their continuing changing of the modern world.

The Mac mini, almost as if inclusion into an automobile were one of the design points…! If anyone goes this route, keep in mind that you probably will not be pushing a lot of graphics (3d gaming, photo & video editing) so the best bang for the buck would be the server version with the quad-core i7 CPU. Go for the SSD to avoid any head crashing if you hit a bump, and reinstall just the Lion client as I doubt many need an on-the-go mobile server! Although, the idea is intriguing; a mobile data center… ;^p

It's not easy to find a mount that looks aesthetically pleasing. I'll more likely buy a 7" win8 tablet for car use.
