FT86 weight speculation anyone? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Anyone care to take some educated guesses? Anyone think this thing will be able to stay under 3,000 pounds?

With a regular non-turbo 2.0L this thing will have to stay under 3,000 pounds to have a nice power/weight ratio and make it the lighweight compact sports car Toyota is going after.

This car should be definetly under 3,000 or at least right at that figure based on the prototype measurements. The car is a hair longer and wider but slighty shorter than a S2000. However, roadsters in general are heavier than their coupe counterparts so the FT has a good chance in staying under 3k. I'm hoping for around 12:1 power-to-weight ratio for a car that is going to cost about $20000.

I think this car would be around the 3000 lb mark. It has to have modern safety equipment of any 2010 mass market car and that kind of equipment usually gets a car up to the 3000lb mark by default.

If the Porsche Cayman S can pull off 2965lbs with a flat 6, heavy cast wheels, and 2 x 55lbs powered seats using a host of traditional, non-composite materials, the FT86 with lighter (non-powered, non-leather) seats, smaller wheels, and a lighter flat 4 should be able to pull it off easily and still meet the safety standards. I believe it's also smaller than the Cayman S, so technically it is possible.

I'm going to guess ~2,800lbs. With all the safety regulations manufacturers are faced with nowadays, I think it will be an extremely difficult task to get it to 2,600-2,700 pounds.

I'd be happy with 2800 pounds even. Even the Genesis 2.0T is 3294 pounds and the 3.8 is 3389 pounds. What's fun about a sports car that's nearly 3500 pounds?!

Well, same idea, I guess...

According to 7tune, Toyota was originally aiming for 1100 kg, or 2420 lbs, but that was back when they were looking at a 1.5 motor. With a 2.0 engine, safety features, etc., I figure a good 200 - 300 lbs may have gotten tacked on.

Still, that would be pretty light, and would be well matched to a ~200 bhp motor (as a starting point, anyway).

If they can keep the FT under 2800K, I will be definitely buying this car as a second vehicle.

I personally think that 2600 is very do-able. Look at the current MX-5 they weigh in at 2500 with a 2.0 and 6-speed gearbox. The PRHT only adds about 75 pounds to that.

As far as pricing goes. It has to start at under $20,000.00. I don't think it would be wise for toyota to price it with the genesis.

I'll throw my estimate in, which will be 2600-2700lbs and start at $21,995. I own a tC and it's 2950lbs with 106" wheelbase, 12" longer overall length, heavy reclining rear seats, glass roof/sunroof, and a 2.4l engine. Yes, adding RWD to the package will increase the weight somewhat, but hopefully it won't be enough to offset the all of the other things I posted about above...

The measurements are a bit off but weighing around 2600 lbs could be realistic.

I just hope the safety nazi... er, I mean nannies don't completely ruin the weight of this car so it comes out bloated. And for a car this small, bloated, imho, would be anything more than 2800 lbs (though I'd really like to see something under 2600 lbs, but I think that's just wishful thinking).
